Automatic gates for a Bradford school, and the paperwork that goes with them.

We have written up the Oastlers School job on our website. Two automated gates and a third access controlled pedestrian gate, all running on Paxton access control and tied into the fire alarm so they release if it goes off.

An automated gate is legally classed as machinery, and under PUWER the duty to keep it safe sits with the school or the trust, not the installer. So every gate was force tested to BS EN 12453 and handed over with a full technical file, not just a certificate.

If you look after a school site and you are not sure when your gates were last force tested, that is worth knowing before somebody else asks.

New Airedale Monthly is up.

Several school jobs this month, twin wire mesh round the perimeters and roll top mesh closer to the buildings for the walkways. Some seriously hard digging, and one slope that had us questioning our life choices.

This fence post had been in the ground about eighteen months. That is what it looked like when we dug it out.

A school in Keighley called us because the fencing round their MUGA was leaning and moving. Barely eighteen months old. Rather than just straighten it, we dug trial holes to find out why.

Two answers. The posts had been set shallow with next to no concrete. And the holes kept filling with water, because the tarmac court was holding it underneath with nowhere to drain.

So the drainage got fixed first, then the fence got straightened and strengthened, and one side went up from 2.4m to 3.6m because the kids kept putting footballs in the farmer's field next door. Extra struts along that side to carry the height.

Fixing the fence is easy. Fixing the reason it broke is the bit that lasts.

They may not look like much but extensions like these can make a big difference to the secuirty of your premises. This school had a problem of kids climbing over the fence but these extensions that are cranked over the mesh fencing will act as a great deterrent.
