A bank holiday gate,made and swinging by lunchtime today.

Another lovely day to be outside. Two cups of tea and a few biscuits helped get my customers gate in its right and proper place.
All hung on galvanised steel hardware.

What a day to be working outside.
New door,frame and facia board for my customer. All ready to be painted, and hopefully will last another 100 years,with regular maintenance..that window is just about holding on.

These '1930' style oak doors look really nice in this refurbishment property that im working on in Dorchester. 6 swung, all on brass hardware.
There is quite a lot to do on this project in the coming months, lovey returning clients,who will oil the doors them selves . The doors have been protected so the painters can get on.

If you have to take the bottom of any door,always make sure you apply PVA glue to the exposed edge,especially to bathroom doors. As you can see on the picture, the door is essentially made up of compressed wood and will soak up moister, resulting in delamination and a failed door.the glue will form a barrier to water wicking.
It takes two minutes.

Last week the weather was on my side,so it was on with replacing this very rotten decking, in poundbury.the main issue was the frame had been sat in the mud for the past 15 odd years,with no airflow underneath,resulting in ideal conditions to shorten its life!
So out with the old,and a new pressure treated frame,and pressure treated deck laid.
The small details make the big picture and result in a really good finish. Consistent margins and gaps is the name of the game..
My customer wanted away with the step,and asked me to build a slope,to transition one level to the next.
10/10 on the tea on this job.

And the next job I documented was to make a window board,header board and a hand rail.

All in all a variable few days work.

A nice front door restoration on Portland.
The first thing was to remove all of the rotten wood,and then to apply a hardener. This also opens the grain of the wood,to allow good adhesion for the epoxy filler to marry both new and old.
The epoxy filler i use is really the best stuff on the market..the issue with the traditional way of scarfing in new timber to old,is that the two timbers have different moister levels,and quite frankly new timber (new growth) is not comparable to old species,and will move with the seasonal weather at different rates,and this results in expansion and contraction and water ingress,which will result in the rott to continue.
The resin bridges the gap between existing and new,and it flexis with the two,is waterproof, sands beautifully.
You can see from a few of the pictures I've put conservation joints,on all joints.one was showing only a hair line crack in the paint,but when I scraped and revealed the bare timber underneath, the rott had already set in.
I advise all of my customers to stay on to of your exteria wood work,and paint- treat every couple years.

A few pictures of this week's work. My customer had enough of the under stairs clutter,so my instructions were to make it tidy..so we came up with this simple and functional cupboard. The doors are on soft close cabinet hinges,and with push to open catches.i routered a simple v groove detail, to add a little interest. They will be taking care of the painting.
I also fitted this add on to the kitchen.larder unit,again on push to open catches,worktop and built some pigeon hole storage.

It's been another busy week,with fitting a small kitchen,making and hanging a new coal bunker door and frame,and repairing a front door that had a fair bit of rott set in..unfortunately I've only managed to take a few snaps.

The past few days work,that I've remembered to photo!..a lovely new laminate floor, two new door frames,skirting and architrave.
With two doors hung ,and a cupboard door made and hung on soft close cabinet hinges.
Although the new woodwork & doors are primed,they will need a top coat of paint to finish off.
A weekend off the tools and into the office,getting quotes out to my clients.

This floor was a labour of love.
Up the the old floor, and I renewed some of the rotten joists.
My client had enough of the inner porch, so that went too.
And then it was a good few days,getting this lovely pine floor and new skirting fitted.
The floor was secret nailed,to give it a nice clean Finnish.
Ir will be oiled in the new few days
Lovely clients,and 10/10 on the tea commitments.
