Hey up folks, I've been out to a rather interesting wasp nest today where wasps were entering a disused overflow pipe for a water tank in an Airing cupboard and wasps were randomly appearing in the bathroom.

We have another Summer pest update for you. 😊

We have been recieving a lot of calls about these little guys, Particularly during the hot weather.

Folks are reporting that their box hedges look dead and need to know why.

9 times out of 10 it is as a result of these little critters. 😳

The critter in question is the Box Hedge Moth. The adult moths lay eggs which hatch into caterpillars. The caterpillars decimate Box Hedges and once they had had their fill, They pupate into adult moths, Mate, Lay eggs and so the cycle continues. 🫣

Very pretty but VERY destructive. 😳

Good morning All, I hope you're all well and rested after the LOVELY Bank Holiday weekend. 😊

I just thought I'd show you this interesting BEEhaviour. 😂

It's not just us humans that are feeling the heat but so are these Bumblebees. 😃

What you can see here is that there is obviously a Bumblebee nest beneath these roof tiles and as it's so warm, We have Bumblebees outside the nest Fanning their wings to try and dissipate heat from the nest.

How Fabulous is that? 😃

We are getting LOADS of calls about Bumblebees at the moment! Bumblebees are a placid species that while they can sting, They don't do so very often. They generally only sting if they feel very threatened. So, If they are out of the way for example at Gutter height which they often are then you can just ignore them and in around 6-8 weeks, They will disappear of their own accord.

Now then, People often see bumblebees but how many of you have seen a bumblebee nest?

Well today is your lucky day because this is a fantastic picture of a bumblebee nest that was discovered by one of our customers, Clare, in her recycling bin. 😊

Wasp Nest Size Update. 🙂

The wasp nests have started. 😊

Wasp nests at the moment consist of One Queen wasp that has recently come out of hibernation and started building a nest, Normally in a fairly undisturbed area such as a shed or an outhouse.

The nests at this time of year are a little smaller than a golf ball and contains a small number of cells which the queen has laid eggs in.

She will nurture these eggs into grubs which will then hatch into worker wasps that will then start to build the nest into something much bigger. Once the workers start hatching, The nests will start to grow much more rapidly so keep an eye out for something like this in your shed or outhouse and give us a call if you'd like us to come and deal with it for you. 🙂

Another Spring insect update 😊:

As promised, As and when I find them, I will update you with Spring insects.

So, Here we have "Nomad Bees"

These are a type of bee that are normally found hanging around little mounds in the soil (where Miner bees have nested) and around the entrance to masonry bee nests too.

These guys are easily mistaken for wasps courtesy of their vivid yellow and black markings but they are in fact a type of bee.

They are also known as "Cuckoo Bees" because just like cuckoos lay their eggs in other bird's nests, These little bees do the same with Masonry and Miner bee nests. They sneak into the nest when the Miner or Masonry Bee is away foraging and lay their own little egg in the nest instead. 🙂

Once again, They don't pose a risk as they are a solitary type of bee but these can be distinguished from wasps by the dark brown colour of their wings and their slender bodies that are much slimmer than wasps. 🙂
