Benny Kuriakose Associates Conservation and Architectural Design Consultancy Firm winning awards and doing landmark projects.

In his quest as a creative person, Benny Kuriakose has travelled diverse paths and translated the philosophy of his mentor Laurie Baker many times over. A retrospective of his work reflects his perseverance to transform those same concepts of cost effectiveness, conservation and sustainable architecture, in several sequences, whether it be in his designs for personal or public spaces. BK's strict

adherence to the universal principles of architecture can be seen in the range of his work : in individual houses, resorts and institutional projects, in the Dakshinachitra project in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in the rehabilitation of disaster sites at Nagapattinam, Bhuj or Lattur and in the Heritage Project at Muziris in Kerala. Apart from being a professional with strong principles, Benny is a serious student and researcher. He readily shares his knowledge and expertise in his projects, his workshops and in his writings.

In this talk, Dr. Benny Kuriakose explains the use of natural binding materials for earthen blocks, challenging the misconception that cement is the only viable stabilizer. He highlights traditional alternatives like lime and natural additives—such as pig's urine, historically used in southern Kerala for its high urea content—and emphasizes that true sustainability in architecture requires a holistic approach, from foundations to energy consumption.

Designed by Benny Kuriakose and Associates, this farmhouse project emphasises vernacular design and a seamless connection with nature. The visual highlights a long, open corridor paved with matte stone tiles, sheltered under an expansive sloping roof lined with traditional clay tiles and a rich wooden framework. Sturdy stone pillars with white bases support the structure, interspersed with distinctively curved wooden brackets. Large glass panels frame the indoor spaces, while the corridor looks out onto a lush green lawn and tropical foliage.

The Huilekere House, designed by Benny Kuriakose and Associates, is nestled amid a coffee field and was inspired by the Ainmanes, which are the ancestral home of the people of Coorg. All architectural components pay attention to Coorg Ainmane's centuries-old traditions, including the front verandah, courtyard, and chadara Kamba, or big, square, wooden pillars that taper upward. This house's courtyards provide natural light and ventilation. All of the rooms are connected to the courtyards through passageways. Around the two courtyards and on all four sides of the house, the tiled roof slopes downward. This classic residence displays aesthetically appealing elevations without the need for additional ornamental embellishments.
