At the Namibia Biomass Industry Group (N-BiG), we are proud to contribute to a greener future by advancing sustainable biomass solutions that restore rangelands, strengthen ecosystems, and unlock economic opportunities from encroacher bush.

Through responsible biomass value chains, we support land restoration, renewable energy production, and environmentally friendly practices that transform an ecological challenge into meaningful, job creating solutions. This is how we contribute to a healthier planet by creating value through restoration while strengthening sustainable livelihoods and building a more resilient landscape.

This Earth Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building a greener, more resilient Namibia and a future where people and nature thrive together.

Yesterday, Namibia Biomass Industry Group (N-BiG) successfully convened the BBE Implementation Strategy Workshop, uniting key partners and stakeholders and N-BiG members to advance Namibia’s bioeconomy

Hosted in collaboration with Bundesverband Bioenergie e.V. (BBE) (The Bioenergy Association in Germany) and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ), the workshop marked the official transition into Phase 2 of the project: “Strengthening N-BiG and increasing the Namibian bioeconomy.”

Through reflection on Phase 1 achievements, strategic alignment, and interactive stakeholder engagement, participants co‑developed practical pathways for implementation.

Key outcomes included:

- Consolidated strategic recommendations from stakeholders

- Strengthened collaboration and commitment among partners

BIOMASS: The Ministry will spend N$155.4 million to support the conversion of bush biomass into value-added products such as charcoal, woodchips, firewood and biochar during the 2026-2027 financial year. The initiative aims to curb bush encroachment while promoting sustainable rangeland management, supported by a national forestry inventory.

To strengthen community participation in forestry, the Ministry plans to gazette three community forests covering approximately 360,000 hectares. It will also review the Forest Act and its regulations to address emerging and contemporary challenges.

In addition, the Ministry is developing a national wildfire management policy to strengthen fire prevention and control measures at national level.

The Otjikoto Biomass Power Station marks an important step toward sustainable energy generation and rangeland restoration in Namibia.

NamPower, as the project owner, is implementing the initiative with financial support from AFD - Agence Française de Développement, The Mitigation Action Facility (MAF), and the Fonds français pour l'environnement mondial (FFEM). The project is further strengthened by the support of implementing partners, including the Namibia Biomass Industry Group (N-BiG), the Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF), and IED.

This collaboration showcases how encroacher bush can be transformed into renewable energy, while simultaneously supporting rural economies and promoting sustainable land management.

Watch how the Otjikoto Biomass Power Station fuel supply chain works.
