A recent paper in MDPI’s Buildings journal looked at the feasibility of 3D printed housing in New Zealand—and the results are worth paying attention to.

Using life cycle assessment of 3 houses: 3dcp vs timber vs LGS steel , the study found:
• ~20% lower carbon emissions vs timber
• ~25% lower vs light steel framing
• ~19% lower operational energy use

Thats already a clear advantage.

And this study is based on houses lifespan of 50 years.

But it fundamentally understates the value of concrete.

A well-designed concrete structure isn’t a 50-year product. It’s a 150–200+ year asset.

So if you stretch the same analysis across a realistic lifespan:
• Carbon per year drops significantly
• Replacement cycles are eliminated
• Lifecycle cost and environmental impact shift dramatically in favour of concrete

In other words, 3D printed concrete isn’t just “slightly better” than timber—it’s operating on a completely different time horizon.

More people are starting to compare lime plaster + natural breathable paints with the standard acrylic paint systems on plasterboard used in most homes. The differences aren’t just technical — they’re about how your home behaves.

We used natural plant based breathable paints from Natural Paint Co, NZ made, and were really impressed with the result, and the best part is a very nice smell from walls, feels like citrus with sandal wood
