Congratulations to Steve McHaffie from Thompson Engineering 2002 Ltd, who was crowned Canterbury Westland’s supreme digger operator at the CCNZ CablePrice Canterbury Westland Excavator Operator Competition on Saturday.

Held at Road Metals Quarry in Rolleston, the competition challenged operators with a range of tests that showcased skill, precision and safety, from excavator golf and egg placement to truck loading and technical assessments.

Steve will represent Canterbury Westland at the CCNZ National Excavator Operator Competition finals in Feilding next March.

Well done to all competitors who showcased the talent, professionalism and expertise that keep our industry moving.

Humes Petone Team Celebrates Success and New Beginnings

A few weeks ago, the Humes Petone team came together for a celebratory feast.

Originally planned as a spring hāngī, cooked using a modern kai cooker, the occasion became a chance to recognise a number of recent milestones and successes across the team. From personal achievements and growing families to a bumper sales month and the securing of several significant projects, there was plenty to celebrate.

Peter and Elijah prepared the kai for the team, with Peter taking a moment before lunch to acknowledge the many blessings and achievements the team has enjoyed recently.

At Humes, it's important to celebrate the moments that bring us together. The feast was a great opportunity for the Petone team to reflect on their successes, recognise personal milestones, and enjoy a well-earned catch-up over a shared meal.

Earlier this week we welcomed the Fletcher Building’s The Equality Network Women’s Mentoring Programme cohort to our Humes Papakura factory — an energising moment for our team and a powerful reminder of why representation matters.

The group had the chance to get up close with our concrete pipe and precast manufacturing operations, ask questions and see firsthand the scale and impact of what we build every day. The feedback was incredibly positive and we’re grateful for the opportunity to showcase the work our people do.

The Equality Network is a 12-month programme accelerating women’s careers and strengthening female leadership across Fletcher Building. The Equality Network plays a key role in creating an inclusive workplace and ensuring women have access to development pathways, industry networks and practical support.

Humes is proud to support initiatives that lift capability, open doors and build the next generation of leaders in our industry!

Our team enjoyed attending the event at Auckland's Due Drop Events Centre, connecting with professionals from across the building and construction industry and sharing how Humes supports infrastructure projects around New Zealand.
