Gold Award recognition for Summerset multi-residential

Summerset’s largest retirement village to date has received a Gold Award in the Residential category at the 2026 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards.

Designed by Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, the award for Summerset St Johns recognises the success of the full project, from design through construction to final ex*****on.

For Belcanto, this project represented its largest balcony project to date: over 120 customised Grappler balcony units, alongside balustrades, fascia cladding, privacy screens and pergolas.

Belcanto’s contribution:

— Customised, fully clad balcony systems, made in NZ
— Cleaner balcony-to-façade detailing
— Speedy installation
— Reduced site complexity
— Earlier scaffold removal

For Summerset, the advantage was a completed clean facade before the balconies went on.

‘The only waterproofing we need to do is around the structural support stubs as they come out through that facade. The balcony installation followed through with the slide-on system, which was great. The other key factor for us was the cost savings, being able to drop the scaffolding early.’

The componentised construction solution enabled by Grappler Balconies drastically reduced trades on site, simplified warranties, and derisked one of the most important penetrations on the facade. Not to mention programme speed.

Factory-built balustrades at Bupa Crofton Downs

This modern retirement village required a balustrade solution that worked with the surrounding landscape while complementing the building’s strong geometric form.

Designed by JTB Architects and delivered by Naylor Love, the project features a steel-framed structure with rib raft floors, a mix of concrete and timber cladding, and clean-lined roof forms.

Belcanto’s dual-finish balustrade incorporated both horizontal and vertical fins to echo the rhythm of the facade and align with the building’s structure.

A careful colour-matching process unified the balustrade with the surrounding materials, reinforcing the symmetry between external walls and the steel roof line.

The prefabricated system was engineered for construction speed, enabling straightforward sequencing across steel decks and reducing complexity during installation.

Offsite manufacturing of balconies brings essential cost and programme benefits

The Metlifecare Gulf Rise apartments at Red Beach, north of Auckland, incorporate modern balcony solutions that showcase the potential of intelligent offsite manufacturing.

Designed and engineered by Auckland-based Belcanto, the lightweight, modular Grappler glide-on balcony system dramatically improved construction time, cost-efficiency and build quality.

Metlifecare approached Belcanto in 2021 with a large delivery program and a need for smarter, faster building solution.

Using the Grappler balcony was a key part of achieving this. No stranger to innovative modular products, Metlifecare has also specified bathroom pods and modular facade panels for their projects.

What is componentised construction?

Componentised construction is a method where major building elements – facades, balconies, balustrades – are precision-manufactured off-site as complete units, then delivered ready to install.

It moves work from the construction site to the factory:

— improving quality control
— accelerating programmes
— reducing trades on-site

Belcanto makes: balconies, balustrades, screens, canopies, and other custom facade items.

And they are all designed and made by us in Levin, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Custom balustrade at 59 France Street

Belcanto’s custom aluminium balustrade system replaced steel, delivering clean design, fast installation and exceptional strength. CNC precision enabled 600 metres of balustrades to be installed in just eight weeks.

CMP Construction approached Belcanto with a critical question: Could the project’s steel balustrade specification be replaced with aluminium without losing the architectural intent?

Working closely with architects PB&A, our team developed a completely new mechanical system from the ground up.

Designed for visual simplicity and fast installation, the solution eliminated welding, reduced weight, and delivered precision detailing through CNC fabrication.

Beautiful exterior systems.

Family-owned, New Zealand-made, and always evolving, Belcanto are a team that thinks like makers, builds like engineers, and collaborates like partners.

Our story began in the mid-80s with a small Kiwi business crafting steel gates and pool fencing – the origins of Urban Group.

In the ’90’s, we shifted to aluminium for its durability, precision and design flexibility, and moved into commercial fabrication, delivering projects that required greater scale, speed and architectural finish.

In 2011, we expanded with a purpose-built factory and powder-coating plant in the North Island and grew our team to include designers and project managers, giving us full end-to-end capability.

To focus on construction at scale, we launched Belcanto in 2019. Led by third-generation family member and Director William Stewart, we secured exclusive rights to the Patented Glide-On® balcony system developed by Sapphire Balconies in the UK.

We’ve refined the system for our market, branded it Grappler Balconies, and integrated it with own Attaché aluminium balustrade and screen systems.

We are rethinking how exterior facade features are designed and built to create faster, simpler, more beautiful buildings.

Last week, we managed to gather the entire Belcanto team together for a rare but rewarding day of celebration, team building, and plotting our next moves. 2024 has been another jam-packed year, with some amazing projects wrapped up. Now, we’re gearing up to roll that energy straight into 2025.

A big thanks to our suppliers, specifiers, clients, and contractors — your trust and support keep us moving ahead. We look forward to tackling more big ideas and projects with you next year.

Enjoy a well-earned break with your family and friends, and maybe a barbecue or two in the glorious Kiwi summer (fingers crossed for the weather).
