Strive for improvement, treat everyone with kindness and respect don’t be an as***le. Do all these things right and still get judged.

We talk about the tieke (saddleback), a special bird that was brought on our ancestors’ waka from Hawaiki to Aotearoa as a mokai to help with navigation by detecting weather pattern changes. We share the purakau of how the tieke got its distinctive red-brown saddle marking on its back - stemming from when Maui burnt the bird’s back after it refused to fetch him water while he was slowing down the sun. This story explains why tieke are so connected to water and are always found fluttering around it.

Whakapapa of Kiwi, Pūkeko, Tui, Pīpīwharauro.

We talk about the whakapapa (genealogy) of several native birds - the kiwi, pukeko, tui, and pipiwharauro - through traditional Māori environmental knowledge. We share how Tane Mahuta, the atua of the forest, asked his breather Tane Te Hokahoka for help protecting the trees from insects. When Tane Te Hokahoka approached his children (the birds) for assistance, only the kiwi agreed to help, while the tui, pukeko, and pipiwharauro declined. Each bird received consequences for their choices: the tui was marked with white feathers on its neck, the pukeko was bound to live in swamps and wetlands, the pipiwharauro lost the ability to build its own nest, and the kiwi was transformed with dark hair-like feathers, strong legs, a long beak, and a keen sense of smell to hunt insects in the soil.
