Janaya Russ is committed to ensuring everyone goes home at the end of every day.

She brings this commitment to her role as the Health & Safety Manager on the Te Awa Kairangi Alliance, delivering the SH2 Melling Transport Improvements in Lower Hutt. “Building trust is what matters most to me. I work alongside teams to make safety part of everyday decisions, not just a checklist.”

The alliance has given Janaya the opportunity to train the next generation of safety leaders for Fletcher Construction. Her focus is on creating practical, risk-aware workspaces where frontline teams are engaged from the start.

“Success on any site comes from involving frontline teams early. Engaging them in the work, so they know what’s needed, why it’s important and how to make it part of their daily work,” Janaya said.

Having decades of experience working in high-risk environments in oil, gas and mining, Janaya knows firsthand what happens when safety controls fail, and the devastating consequences.

This is the inspiration behind her goal, that on her watch, people go home to their loved ones.

"Zero accidents is a conscious everyday decision by everyone on site and everyone in the board room. This doesn't just happen - it's a daily mindset that everyone is responsible for safety."

We’re very proud to have our Seaview Resilience Project team win the John Carson Memorial Health & Safety Award at the Wellington Wairarapa Civil Contractors New Zealand New Zealand 2026 Awards – the second year in a row that BPC has received this important recognition.

The project upgraded Wellington’s Seaview Wharf to modern seismic and climate-resilience standards, accommodating larger vessels, and extending asset life—all while operating within a live fuel terminal in a constrained harbour environment.

Managing simultaneous phases of complex construction in a live port environment required close collaboration with client CentrePort, designer Holmes Aus & NZ, and fuel industry operatives. This collaboration led to the development of a framework, the Matrix of Permitted Operations, that enabled high-risk marine construction to proceed safely alongside active ship berthing and significantly enhanced both the project’s productivity and risk management.

The Alliance delivering the SH2 Melling Transport Improvements on behalf of NZTA is laying the foundations for some of the project's next major milestones, with extensive piling works underway to prepare the ground for the new SH2 interchange at Melling, and new bridge over Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River.

As part of this work, the team is delivering two key forms of piling: Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling and sheet piling. Over the coming weeks, around 360 CFA piles will be installed beneath the future bridge abutments and southbound off-ramp, helping stabilise the ground and create a strong platform for the structures to come. The team expects to install approximately 20 piles each day, with each extending between six and 13 metres below ground level, depending on the area they’re being sunk in.

At the same time, sheet piling is being used to support temporary excavations for the Western Hills main sewer while helping maintain the integrity of the stopbank during flood events. Sheet piling is also being used while the team installs major new stormwater pipes through the stopbanks.

Much of this infrastructure will be out of sight once construction is complete, but it plays a vital role in supporting safer, more resilient transport connections for the Hutt Valley and wider region for years to come.

Joyal Jerry is combining his passion for civil engineering and infrastructure with the power of digital technology to help shape one of New Zealand's most significant infrastructure projects.

As Digital Engineering Lead on the Te Awa Kairangi (TAK) project, Joyal is helping teams work smarter through digital tools that improve planning, collaboration and decision-making. The project has given him the opportunity to build and lead a four-person digital engineering team while tailoring technology to the demands of a complex construction environment. It has also allowed him to test new ways of working, support teams on site and see the real-world impact of digital innovation.

"Using technology and digital engineering platforms has been a gamechanger for the construction industry and has added a new layer to my fascination with infrastructure. Moving from 2D paper drawings to interactive live 3D models helps us deliver projects faster and safer."

Looking ahead, Joyal sees exciting opportunities for digital engineering and AI to reduce manual tasks, minimise errors and create more value for project teams. As part of VINCI Construction's global network, he's also keen to learn from international expertise and bring those insights to projects in New Zealand.

Eight months into 2026, the Te Awa Kairangi Alliance has reached several significant milestones as work continues on the SH2 Melling Transport Improvements project. Since January, the team has placed more than 43,000m³ of preload to prepare the ground for the Western Hills Main Sewer relocation, installed over 1km of ducting and Three Waters infrastructure through the Queens Drive–High Street intersection upgrade, and driven more than 2km of ground improvement piles ahead of construction of the new Melling Bridge.

The project has also welcomed more than 900 people through site inductions and maintains an average of 126 people working on site each day. For this project, maintaining strong national and local partnerships are crucial. The Alliance is currently working alongside 69 businesses across the Wellington region, including 23 in the Hutt Valley and 16 iwi mana whenua businesses. Our engagement expands across organisations within the Wellington region and on a national scale to deliver industry expertise.

As construction progresses, the Alliance remains focused on delivering a safer, more resilient transport network while creating lasting benefits for people across the region.

More than seven tonnes of illegally dumped tyres have been removed from waterways and mangroves across the Eastern Busway project area and given a new purpose through recycling.

Rather than sending the tyres to landfill, the project team worked with specialist contractors to transform the waste into new products, including rubber footpaths.

While delivering better connections and sustainable travel options for Aucklanders, we're also looking for ways to make a positive impact on the environment around us. It's one example of how small actions can contribute to healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable future.

The Eastern Busway is delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport, Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM and Jacobs, in partnership with mana whenua.

A highly respected member of BPC’s team and the wider civil contractor community, Mike is committed to supporting others to succeed. This was reflected in the judges’ comments.
