Your switchboard is from the 1980s. Your house now runs a heat pump, an EV charger, and an induction cooktop. Something has to give.

Most Auckland homeowners have no idea their switchboard is a fire or shock risk until something goes wrong. The good news is that three of the biggest warning signs are visible right now, no electrician needed to spot them.

1. You still have porcelain fuses.
Those round ceramic fuses are a clear sign your board is decades old. They offer far less protection than modern circuit breakers and cannot handle the load of today's appliances. If you open your board and see them, it is time to act.

2. No RCD protection on your board.
RCDs (Residual Current Devices) cut power within milliseconds if they detect a dangerous fault. Without them, a faulty appliance or damaged wire can cause electric shock or fire. Check your board: if there is no row of switches labelled RCD or Safety Switch, your home is not protected to current standards.

3. Breakers trip more than once a month.
An occasional trip is normal. Frequent tripping means your board is struggling to handle your home's load, and it only gets worse when you add a heat pump, EV charger, or induction cooktop. A board that trips regularly is telling you it is undersized.

A modern switchboard with RCD protection is one of the most important safety upgrades you can make to your home. Most residential upgrades take less than a day.

This week our team carried out thermal imaging and RCD testing as part of a client's preventative maintenance programme.

From the outside, everything looked normal. But the thermal camera picked up an overheating connection that wasn't visible to the eye. Left unchecked, it could have led to equipment failure and unexpected downtime.

These inspections aren't about finding work that doesn't exist. They're about identifying small issues before they become expensive ones.
