🛑 Auckland Hornet Alert: Two More Nests Found – Public Urged to Stay Vigilant 🛑

Auckland has been hit with another worrying development as two more yellow-legged hornet nests have been discovered on the North Shore, adding to growing concerns about this invasive and highly destructive species. Found just over 100 metres apart in Glenfield, the nests were small but active — each containing a queen, and one already showing signs of emerging worker hornets. This confirms the species is attempting to establish itself, making early detection absolutely crucial.

The yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) is a serious threat to New Zealand’s environment. It aggressively preys on honeybees, native bees, and other pollinators — posing a huge risk to our biodiversity and agricultural sector. New Zealand is one of the few countries in the world still free from this species, and keeping it that way depends on fast reporting and community awareness.

Authorities have deployed dozens of staff and traps across Glenfield and Birkdale, but they can’t search every corner alone. That’s where everyday Kiwis come in.

If you spot a hornet, a nest, or anything suspicious — DO NOT approach it. These hornets can be aggressive when disturbed.

Instead, report it immediately by calling
📞 0800 809 966 (Biosecurity NZ Pest & Disease Hotline).

Clear photos or an exact location help enormously.

Let’s work together to protect our wildlife, our bees, and our way of life.

Here's the press release from Ministry for Primary Industries:

Biosecurity New Zealand is urging Aucklanders to be on the lookout for yellow-legged hornets (Vespa velutina) following the discovery of a queen hornet in the early stages of building a nest in the suburb of Glenfield.

The nest was removed swiftly by biosecurity officers on 17 October, addressing the immediate threat of a colony establishing, says Mike Inglis, North commissioner, Biosecurity New Zealand.

However, with summer approaching, any undetected nests could be a biosecurity risk.

"This is the first time we’ve found a queen yellow-legged hornet in New Zealand," Mr Inglis says.

"We responded quickly to this threat, but we need the public’s help to eliminate any further risk."

Two male yellow-legged hornets were spotted earlier this year in the Auckland suburbs of Grafton and Albany.

"New Zealand is fortunate to be free of hornet populations, and we want it to stay that way," Mr Inglis says.

The yellow-legged hornet is a biosecurity concern due to its potential impact on honeybee and wild bee populations.

"It is a highly adaptable predator with a broad diet, primarily feeding on bees, wasps, and flies, but also ripe fruit and flower nectar, posing a risk to growers. It may compete with native insects and birds for food, and it has a painful sting."

Members of the public are asked to report any sightings of suspected hornets or hornet nests online at report.mpi.govt.nz or by calling Biosecurity New Zealand’s exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 809 966.
