Master Electricians Apprentice Challenge finalist profile:

Liam George, employed by ETCO - The Electrical Training Experts , hosted by Athenry Electrical LTD, Auckland

Liam, 28, worked as a service technician for an Auckland company before starting an apprenticeship as a traction line mechanic. However, finding he was being moved into roles he didn’t particularly enjoy he decided to take up an electrical apprenticeship instead - and hasn’t looked back. He’s in his third year, hosted by Athenry Electrical.

“I was already familiar with the electrical side of things and using tools but my electrical apprenticeship is very different to what I was doing previously. I love it, it’s a good industry to work in. I work with great people, every day is different and I like the problem-solving aspect of the work.”

Congratulations to Liam, we are all behind you for the final

We are really excited to see other industries being able to reopen and get back in business this weekend!

To celebrate this we have given all our staff a prezzie card and have encouraged them to get out and spend this on hospitality and tourism.

Here’s me kicking it of with my daughter and her friends at the local pub

Competency Alone Cannot Be Relied On

WorkSafe is warning businesses that relying on worker competency to manage risky work is no substitute for current and effective risk management plans.

Search and View on Worksafe.govt.nz website - Risky work requires effective and current risk management

https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/about-us/news-and-media/risky-work-requires-effective-and-current-risk-management/

This news and Media release highlights that documentation utilized was generalized and did not include a safe system of work document for the method.

A fine imposed of $275,000 with Reparations of nearly $87,500 along with $7,380.00 in costs

Therefore, Athenry Electricals view is in the Understanding of hazard levels and risk management – Implementing risk scores to reducing the risk with controls.
The development and understanding of these hazards are in the training of competencies, not only in just the tasks but also in designing a safe system of work document.

Where customers are implementing their permit to work systems, it is a requirement for both the issuer and the receiver of such a permit to ensure they are aware of the tasks and work together with the contractor or employee which ensures there is a collective understanding of the work and tasks to be carried out along with all the controls being implemented

As part of the HSWA 2015, Athenry carries out site auditing to ensure all staff are implementing all levels of control. Both Athenry and Customers (The PCBU’s) - Monitoring and educating in the completion of SWMS/JSA, permits and developing the culture of HnS by ensuring controls, PPE, and healthy actions are continuously being implemented.

WorkSafe is warning businesses that relying on worker competency to manage risky work is no substitute for current and effective risk management plans.
