Celebrating 20 Years of Progress in Millwater 🏘️

A look from above at the final chapter of this two‑decade journey — the last civils stage for the WFH Properties development in Millwater.

Hick Bros has been part of this project since day one, helping shape a community right on our doorstep. It’s been a privilege to contribute to a development that has grown alongside us. Many of our people now proudly call these subdivisions home, which makes this milestone even more special.

A huge thank you to every Hick Bros team member — past and present — who has played a part in this labour of love.

Recently, we celebrated the beautifully matured landscaping that the Three Kings community has come to love. Today, we’re highlighting the impressive ongoing earthworks! 🚜🌱

For the 2025/2026 season, progress is full steam ahead. With 30,000m³ of fill still to be placed, the magnitude of this work is a true testament to the planning, coordination, and effort behind the scenes. Every truckload brings us closer to the next milestone for this project.
As we said in our last post, a huge thank you to everyone involved for keeping the momentum strong and delivering on a project of this size. None of this would be possible without an outstanding team. 💪👏

This drone footage captures the beautifully established landscaping that has matured over the past 12–18 months. It’s fantastic to see these green spaces thriving and being well loved by the local community. 🌱

On behalf of Dan Hohneck and the Board, a huge shoutout to the team for laying the groundwork (literally!). Grateful to every person who made this possible - what a team! 💪👏

Exciting Project Announcement! 🌉
Hick Bros Civil Construction is proud to kick off the Waikari (Glenbrook Road) Bridge Replacement Project in the Wairoa District, scheduled for completion in October 2026.

At the start of the month, we were honoured to join rangatira from Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust and Maungaharuru-Tangitū Trust for a karakia on each side of the awa. This ceremony acknowledged the significance of the new bridge and symbolised peace and collaboration between both iwi - a powerful moment that set the tone for a project that’s about so much more than infrastructure.

The original Waikari Bridge was severely damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle, leaving locals reliant on a temporary low-level crossing. Our new 75-metre, three-span steel girder bridge will provide a permanent, resilient solution - complete with abutments, earthworks, and approach roads.

In collaboration with Wairoa District Council, WSP, and mana whenua, we’re delivering a vital upgrade that restores essential access for the Putorino community and surrounding farmland.
This is more than just a bridge - it’s a commitment to resilience and recovery, and Hick Bros is proud to help shape a stronger, more connected future.

Dartmoor Project Nearing Completion – Thank You! 🙌
Excited to share some neat drone footage from Dartmoor as we wrap up work on our sixth and final site of this important recovery project.

The Hick Bros Civil Construction Ltd team has worked with pride and purpose for Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Heretaunga as part of the HDC Recovery Panel, successfully restoring roading networks for communities impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Dan Hohneck, Tom Gaddum and the Board extend a huge thank you to the Dartmoor community for their support and close collaboration throughout. 🤝 Your willingness to work alongside us has been crucial to reaching this milestone!

Patoka From Above 🎥
In September, we shared the story behind our work at Patoka: restoring access, protecting taonga, and building resilience after the cyclone.

Now, we’re excited to show you the finished site from a drone-eye view. This footage captures the scale and detail of the project where we:
✅ Rebuilt a 3.2m culvert to replace the cyclone-damaged original
✅ Installed a fish ladder to safeguard native species and support local ecosystems
✅ Delivered under the Cyclone Repair Panel, working alongside mana whenua

Seeing the completed work from above is a reminder of what collaboration and innovation can achieve – not just repairing infrastructure, but enhancing it for the future.

These impressive Cat® Simulators have been doing some heavy lifting since we purchased them back in 2020. They’ve helped us upskill our team across diggers, dump trucks, bulldozers, graders and more. We’ve used them for pre-employment assessments, given labourers and high school students hands-on familiarity before stepping into the real thing. They’ve kept our crews sharp during wet weather and busy during those Covid-19 disruptions - safe to say, they've truly done it all.

So when the Directors were convinced to jump on the simulators after this month’s Board meeting, it was a great way to showcase the value of these machines, and have a bit of fun while we were at it. For those operating, and for those watching.

No surprise - the Board really dug deep and gave it a go! 🕹️💪

Another One! Self-Performed Wall Completed in Record Time 🔨
A proud moment for Hick Bros as our Flat Bush team successfully completed a fully self-performed steel beam timber pole wall - and in record time!

Ka pai tō mahi, e te tīma! Big shoutout to Chris, Sylvester, Duncan and the Mcquoids Road crew for their outstanding work. This follows our recent success with a self-performed wall in Millwater and reinforces our reputation as leaders in wall construction.

Impressive results like these reflect not only our crew’s skill and efficiency, but also their unwavering commitment to Health and Safety, driven by our Safety in Design approach. We’re proud to foster a Safety First culture through consultation and participation. It’s this foundation that empowers our crews to take ownership and deliver high-quality results like this one.

Massive thanks from Dan and the Board to everyone involved - your mahi has truly raised the bar! 👏
