In the wake of today’s explosion in a house in Christchurch, Master Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers NZ stresses the importance of getting gas appliances regularly serviced.

“We are saddened to see this accident, and our thoughts are with those affected. We want people to be assured that gas appliances are safe, but must be serviced on an annual basis to ensure they are operating correctly and efficiently,” says chief executive Greg Wallace.

Do you know what causes 'sooty' flames?

If your gas hob has an orange or yellow flame instead of the standard blue, chances are your burners are not clean.
Spillovers and cooking grease can block these openings, affecting the flame colour.

Turn all power and utilities off, remove the burners and use an old toothbrush to gently clean the area. Make sure everything is thoroughly dry before you reposition the burners back in their proper spot. Incorrectly placed burner components, such as caps or base rings, can also cause problems.

If ‘sooty' flames are still an issue, stop using the burner and call a professional. when gas is involved!

Water leaks... What a nightmare! Don’t panic. Knowing how to turn off your water supply will save you a lot of stress and limit any major damage.

If you're on the town water supply, locate the toby (shut-off valve) – it's generally at the boundary of your property. Lift the cover and turn the handle clockwise to turn off the water.

If you’re on tank supply in a rural area, switch off the power supply to your pump and/or turn the tap off at the tank.

Once the water’s off, contact your Master Plumber to sort out the problem.
