By the end of 2024, we were tasked with disassembling the Pukekohe World War I Monument and safely storing it during the restoration work at the Pukekohe War Memorial Hall.
- Before anything, a bit of history first! The monument was originally installed at Roulston Park in 1921, where it remained until 1980 when it was relocated to its current site. As shown in the picture, many changes have occurred over the years, including the marble plaque, which was replaced with a new design at some point. Additionally, the lights at the top of the column were removed and replaced with one of the capping stones from the smaller columns located on either side of the monument.
- Before beginning the disassembly, we created a 3D model to help us identify and number the stones accurately.
- A gantry system was set up to assist with moving the heavy stones onto a trailer.
- A diamond-tipped chainsaw was used to carefully cut through the mortar holding the stones together.
- Each stone was then moved with the gantry and loaded onto the trailer for transport to our depot in the CBD.
- We designed and built a custom container to safely store and protect the main marble plaque.
- Some of the stones were lightly repolished to clean them without removing too much material.
- Once cleaned, the stones were stacked on pallets and numbered for easy identification (the yellow markings are barely visible in the photo).
- All pallets were wrapped and numbered for protection. On the left, you can see the special cradle for the main plaque, now securely closed.
We are scheduled to begin rebuilding the monument in early 2026.
