This year has been an incredibly exciting and rewarding one for our team, marked by the delivery of several major heritage and restoration projects. Each of these sites represents a significant piece of New Zealand’s history, and it has been a privilege to play a role in preserving them for future generations.

We are deeply grateful to the clients, institutions, and communities who have placed their trust in us to care for their buildings and monuments. Your confidence in our expertise is what drives us to continually push for excellence in every project we undertake.

We look forward to sharing more of these milestones with you soon—and to continuing the work of protecting our built heritage with the respect and dedication it deserves.

Earlier this year, we wrapped up one of our most challenging and rewarding projects at the Kenneth Meyers Centre.
We would like to thank for entrusting us with this restoration and for choosing to right the wrongs of the past by using original materials. Replacing the pointing with lime mortar brings the building closer to its original design, improving breathability and helping to reduce moisture and mould growth.

Another building preserved, keeping New Zealand's heritage alive!

A big thanks as well to and all our partners for sharing this journey with us!

We’ve been a bit quiet the past few months, but that’s only because there’s been a lot happening behind the scenes. We’ve wrapped up some great projects, kicked off a bunch of new ones, and we’ve also moved. You can now find us at our new depot on 20 Plumer Street, just around the corner from our old spot.

We were privileged to take Deputy Auckland Mayor Desley Simpson up the Auckland Town Hall scaffold a few weeks ago so that she could see the work we're doing to clean, repair, and restore this iconic landmark firsthand. We're always pleased to welcome key stakeholders and decision makers on-site to explain our conservation processes in detail!

"As I saw up close and personal, in many places the Oamaru white stone needed repair, having suffered from the slow process of erosion over many decades. It was interesting to learn that as part of the prep work, a digital 3D model was created [by LimeWorks] using drone footage."

Recently, I had the privilege of experiencing firsthand the amazing conservation work taking place at the Auckland Town Hall clock tower. A few of the key people undertaking the conservation work showed me around as we climbed what seemed like hundreds of stairs all the way to the top, with a lot of...

At Lime Works, we’re always looking for ways to leverage technology to improve and speed up our work. A few weeks ago, we were tasked with conducting a survey of the Khimarama Beach bathroom and changing rooms, and we used photogrammetry to create a 3D model.

This approach proved extremely helpful, as it allowed us to generate a reference model after spending just an hour on-site and taking fewer than 1,000 photos. This significantly reduces the time needed to identify all the defects, which can be detected and marked on the computer once the model is finished.

We did face a few challenges, such as less-than-ideal lighting for this technique and a lack of reference photos for the roof (which we had to recreate in 3D software during post-production).

While the result isn’t flawless, it works perfectly for the job requirements we had!

The end of last year saw us working doing repairs and seismic upgrades to the St. Phillip's Church Tower, another project with Salmond Reed Architects and Backbone Structures.

1 - This was a small but challenging scaffold to build. Thanks to Orange Scaffolding for their hard work!
2 - Many cracked bricks had to be removed and replaced.
3 - The new bricks after being installed.
4 - We repainted the beams supporting the bell to protect it from corrosion.
5 - All the windows on the tower were repaired and repainted.
6 - We repainted the gable roof's eavesboards.
7 - A graphic showing some of the fixings (including -fixings) installed for the seismic upgrade.
8 - It's always a great feeling when the scaffold comes down and reveals a finished work!
9 - The tower looks better than ever.

This video was created using the 3D model we generated for the Pukekohe WWI memorial monument through photogrammetry.

It showcases the internal structure of the column and the individual stones used in its construction, each of which we virtually numbered before disassembling.

This will allow us to accurately identify and return each stone to its original position when we rebuild the monument.

By the end of 2024, we were tasked with disassembling the Pukekohe World War I Monument and safely storing it during the restoration work at the Pukekohe War Memorial Hall.

1- Before anything, a bit of history first! The monument was originally installed at Roulston Park in 1921, where it remained until 1980 when it was relocated to its current site. As shown in the picture, many changes have occurred over the years, including the marble plaque, which was replaced with a new design at some point. Additionally, the lights at the top of the column were removed and replaced with one of the capping stones from the smaller columns located on either side of the monument.

2- Before beginning the disassembly, we created a 3D model to help us identify and number the stones accurately.

3 - A gantry system was set up to assist with moving the heavy stones onto a trailer.

4 - A diamond-tipped chainsaw was used to carefully cut through the mortar holding the stones together.

5 - Each stone was then moved with the gantry and loaded onto the trailer for transport to our depot in the CBD.

6 - We designed and built a custom container to safely store and protect the main marble plaque.

7 - Some of the stones were lightly repolished to clean them without removing too much material.

8 - Once cleaned, the stones were stacked on pallets and numbered for easy identification (the yellow markings are barely visible in the photo).

9 - All pallets were wrapped and numbered for protection. On the left, you can see the special cradle for the main plaque, now securely closed.

We are scheduled to begin rebuilding the monument in early 2026.
