Set within the established Hamilton suburb of Hillcrest, The Muse transforms underutilised land into a carefully considered medium-density residential development.

The project brings together a mix of two and three-bedroom terraced homes and walk-up apartments, offering a range of living options while maintaining a strong sense of privacy, outlook, landscape and neighbourhood character.

We’re proud to see The Muse recognised with a Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Award in the Housing – Multi-unit category. Congratulations to everyone involved in the project.

We’re proud to share that The Muse has received a Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Award in the Housing – Multi-unit category.

Located in Hillcrest, Hamilton, The Muse demonstrates how thoughtful medium-density housing can contribute positively to established neighbourhoods — balancing efficient site planning with generous outlook, privacy, landscape and a strong residential character.

Placemaking.

1) Identify the key site features — the green perimeter, natural edges, views, and historic and cultural features.

2) Create the main axes — the movement lines, view shafts and connections that help structure the site.

3) Connect those features and axes to form a permeable network.

4) The outcome is an urban structure that is legible, connected and place-based.

Deacon Point was a 2016 masterplanning project shaped by its peninsula setting, cultural heritage, coastal edge and relationship to Rangitopuni Creek.

The development reflected its time and planning context, with residential lots, a connected street network, and public access to the coastal edge. It responded to Riverhead’s cultural heritage while helping to realise the outline plan that guided the area.

A mixed-use concept for a growing coastal neighbourhood.

The project explores how retail, hospitality, and shared spaces can come together in a way that feels open, connected, and easy to use. Active ground floor edges engage with the street, while upper levels are shaped to capture outlook, light, and a sense of openness.

Set within a walkable context, the design focuses on creating a place people move through, pause in, and return to — contributing to a more social, well-used local centre.

Last week we were back in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington for the NZPI Conference — at the head of the fish of Māui — for a valuable few days of learning, discussion, and connection.

Highlights included:
– the Immerse Yourself in Central Government tour, including a panel discussion with legislative process experts and the chance to see the Parliament in sitting
– an excellent line-up of keynote speakers, including our favourite, Chuck Marohn
– meeting new people, making new friends, and reconnecting with others across the profession
– a walking tour of Wellington’s historic buildings, hosted by Wellington City Council
– and the opportunity to present our talk, Building Better Kāinga

It was a great few days and a good reminder of the value of getting together to share ideas, challenge thinking, and keep improving the way we shape towns and cities.

We are stoked to have been shortlisted for the Waikato & Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards!

Our project, The Muse, has been recognized by the Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA jury for its creative approach to medium-density living in Hillcrest, Hamilton.

From the beginning, our goal was to prove that intensification doesn’t have to mean monotony. By focusing on rigorous site planning and varied architectural forms, we’ve designed a community of terraces and apartments that feels like home while activating the streetscape.

Big thanks to the jury for the nod. Now, we wait for the winners to be announced on Friday, May 15!
