🇹🇴 Ko e kaha’u ʻo Tonga – let’s power it ourselves

As a Tongan sparky working here in New Zealand, I’m watching what’s happening back home in Tonga with fuel prices and power cuts… and it’s tough. Families, businesses, whole communities are feeling it.

But here’s the thing — we already have one of the best energy sources in the world.
☀️ The sun.

Solar + battery systems aren’t just “nice to have” anymore.
They’re a real solution for:
• Lower power bills
• Keeping the lights on during outages
• Reducing reliance on imported fuel
• Building long-term energy independence

Right now, policy settings in Tonga like gross metering limit how much everyday people can benefit from solar. It means households can’t fully use the power they generate themselves.

👉 What if we flipped that?

What if we enabled self-consumption — so families can use their own solar power first, store it in batteries, and rely less on the grid?

That’s how countries build energy resilience.
