Pink on two wheels

Yesterday our very own Rochelle joined hundreds of riders for Auckland’s 23rd Pink Ribbon Ride, turning the city streets into a sea of pink for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

She didn’t ride alone. Her husband was at the handlebars and riding pillion was the star of the show: her teddy bear princess, fully dressed for the occasion.

Every year more than 3,700 Kiwis are diagnosed with breast cancer. Events like this fund research, breast health education and free support for patients and their whānau.

Proud of you Rochelle. Thanks for showing up for such an important cause and putting a smile on a few faces along the way.

Today is Global Handwashing Day!
Here are a few numbers worth remembering.
Washing with soap:
Cuts the risk of diarrhoeal illness by over 40%
Lowers the risk of colds by about 16%
But only if the soap is there:
Among people who skip washing, most blame missing soap or paper towels
It’s the top reason high school students don’t wash at school, even though 97% say handwashing matters for their health.
Empty or jammed dispensers rank among people’s biggest washroom frustrations.
Most people want to wash their hands. A well-stocked washroom takes away the excuse. Full soap dispensers, plenty of paper towels and clean, working sinks make the right thing the easy thing.
Wet, soap, scrub for 20 seconds, rinse, dry with a paper towel. That’s it!
To help get the message up on the walls, we’ve made free posters and short videos in te reo Māori and English. Put them in washrooms, staffrooms, classrooms, anywhere people stop to wash.

Some of the washrooms we service don't stay in one place!
SeaLink's ferries are on our run, so a few of the washrooms we look after spend their days out on the Hauraki Gulf. Servicing them means working around the busy sailing timetable.
On a sunny spring morning, we're not complaining. Whatever the weather, the washrooms still need servicing.
We have been looking after businesses since 2001, including plenty that take a bit of planning to reach. If yours is somewhere hard to reach, that is all part of the job for us.

Our team don't usually get taken flying for doing a good job!

Faiyaz Ali has looked after the New Zealand Warbirds Association site for the past four years. The team there describe him as: "a really nice man and would like to pay it forward for everything he's done for us". Last week they paid it forward in style by putting him in the back seat of one of their vintage Harvards.

You may have seen these aircraft without knowing it. On Sunday they flew over Keith Park Village in Hobsonville, where the community gathered to honour the village namesake Sir Keith Park ahead of Battle of Britain Day, alongside classic cars and motorcycles.

Faiyaz took off from Ardmore for a 45 minute flight over the Harbour Bridge and around Waitākere, with his wife watching from the runway. He came back with the biggest smile we have seen on him.

We talk a lot about service in this industry. Most of the time it looks like turning up, doing the job properly and treating people well, over and over again. Faiyaz has done that for four years, and the Warbirds team noticed.

A massive thank you to the New Zealand Warbirds Association for looking after us, and for the fascinating tour after the flight.

We're right behind this one. Our washroom education posters are now available in te reo Māori, free for anyone to download and print. There's a handwashing video to go with them too.

Put them up at work, at your kura, wherever they'll get seen. If you use them, send us a photo. We'd love to see where they end up.

We're proud to share that Hygiene Systems has been recertified as a Toitū CarbonReduce organisation, for the second year running.
While our absolute emissions rose slightly with growth, we achieved a real reduction in emissions intensity, less carbon per dollar of revenue, independently verified by Toitū.
1.55 tCO2e reduction against base year. Roughly equal to 6,340 km of driving
