LANDSCAPE AS ATMOSPHERIC ARCHITECTURE

The most successful pergolas are not structures added to a home.

They are spaces that complete it.

A pergola can frame the sky, soften the transition between indoors and outdoors, create shelter without enclosure, and transform a patio into a destination.

In many ways, it becomes the threshold between architecture and landscape.

This series explores different pergola forms and material combinations, each creating a distinct atmosphere.

Gable forms introduce height and presence.

Hip roofs create balance and elegance.

Perimeter frames offer clean contemporary lines.

Timber sarking brings warmth and texture.

Acrylic roofing welcomes light while maintaining protection.

The right solution is never simply a matter of style.

It is about understanding how a space will be lived in, experienced, and remembered.

Every line has a purpose.

The best landscapes are often revealed, not reinvented. 🌿

When I first became involved with this garden, the structure was already in place. Beautiful pleached hedging, strong geometry, elegant proportions, and a timeless palette had established an exceptional framework.

My role was to build upon those foundations, introducing a sculptural water feature, artwork, and layered underplanting to enrich the experience of the space.

The goal was not to add complexity.

It was to add meaning.

The gentle sound of water now animates the garden. The sculpture creates a focal point and moment of discovery. The underplanting softens the architecture and weaves the various elements together into a more immersive landscape experience.

A reminder that great design is not always about starting again.

Sometimes it is about listening to what a garden wants to become, then making a series of thoughtful interventions that allow it to reach its full potential.

🌟 One Step at a Time. One Life at a Time. 🌟

This year I’m taking on the Sky Tower Step Up Challenge, climbing the equivalent of 51 floors and 1,103 steps to help raise funds for people and families facing blood cancer.

For me, this climb is about more than stairs.

It’s about every person fighting a battle they didn’t choose.
It’s about the families walking beside them.
It’s about hope, resilience, and the belief that together we can help make a difference.

As a landscape designer, I often talk about growth. Growth doesn’t happen all at once. It happens one small step at a time. This challenge feels much the same.

If you’re able to support the cause, no matter how big or small the donation, I’d be incredibly grateful. Every contribution helps fund vital support services, research, and care for those affected by blood cancer.

💡✨ Landscape lighting is more than illumination. It’s atmosphere.

A well-designed garden doesn’t disappear when the sun goes down. It transforms.

These beautiful images from Mint Design AU are a reminder of how light can become part of the architecture itself. Not simply revealing a space, but shaping emotion, creating focal points, and inviting people to linger a little longer.

From softly illuminated walls reflected in water, to subtle step lighting and the gentle glow of planting, the most successful lighting designs feel effortless. You notice the feeling long before you notice the fitting.

At the Home Show over the weekend I had the pleasure of catching up with Jordan from Landscape Lighting Co NZ. His passion for the craft and infectiously positive energy have a way of uplifting every space he enters, much like great lighting itself. 🌿

As landscape designers, we often focus on form, texture, materials and planting. Yet lighting is what extends the life of a garden, allowing it to be experienced in a completely different way after dark.

The magic isn’t in how much light you add.

It’s in knowing where to place it.
