Last Guy Fawkes, the busiest stretch for fire crews came after dark.

In Wānaka, the first of a cluster of fireworks-related fires was reported around 9.16pm, and crews were still working on the last one at 11pm. In Karioitahi, a ceiling fire just after 9pm brought three appliances and a water tanker to a family home.

A few hours on a single night can set off a rebuild that takes far longer to resolve. When it does, the claim is measured against the Sum Insured on the policy, not the property's market value.

Fire safety belongs with the experts at Fire and Emergency. Making sure the Sum Insured reflects today's costs is where a qualified Quantity Surveyor comes in.

Labour Day is a reminder of how far workplace conditions have come.

It’s a great time to take a moment to acknowledge everyone across the construction and insurance industries who keep projects moving.

We hope everyone is enjoying their well deserved long weekend.

The construction industry can look slow on paper.

In the latest Rebuild Confidence podcast, Andy and Brett point out that this isn't the case everywhere, with some builders unable to take on more work and regions like Queenstown short on trades.

A quiet national headline doesn't mean Rebuild Costs have stopped moving underneath it.

In many parts of the country, the opposite is true.

From Auckland to Otago, the CCC whānau showed up in pink 🩷

Last week, the CCC team came together from right across Aotearoa to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

From collecting donations at local Pink Ribbon fundraisers to wearing pink, sharing photos and joining in from wherever they call home, it was awesome to see our people getting behind a cause that touches the lives of so many New Zealanders and their whānau.

While we spend our days supporting communities through the built environment, this was an opportunity to come together for something even bigger, raising awareness, showing support and helping make a difference.

A massive mihi to everyone who volunteered, donated, wore a ribbon, snapped a photo or simply helped start an important conversation.

Different locations. One team. One cause. 🎀

Brokers are about to have a lot more of these conversations.

Andy and Brett talk through what a hardening market actually means for Brokers specifically, not just property owners.

Most aren't avoiding the Valuation conversation with clients, they're ready for it.

Raising it before renewal, makes it a far easier conversation to have.

Renewal pricing has sat still for the past couple of years.

Andy and Brett get into why that's about to change, as the market shifts from soft to hard and Insurers stop competing as hard for business.

Premiums move with it, often more than people expect.

An inflationary provision and a genuine cost spike are not the same thing.

Andy and Brett break down why a standard Rebuild Valuation covers general inflation, but not a sudden jump in materials or labour.

That gap is exactly what catches people out when valuations are left too long.

Revalue sooner rather than later, so any correction stays manageable.

A soft market can feel like a safe one. It isn't.

Andy and Brett explain why the risk of being underinsured has nothing to do with which way the market is moving.

Whether the market is soft or hard, the exposure for property owners stays exactly the same underneath.

As Andy puts it plainly: "You can still be underinsured."

A soft market has made underinsurance easy to ignore. That comfort is not going to last.

Andy and Brett unpack why the insurance market is expected to harden before the end of the year, what that means for renewal pricing, and why underinsurance risk never went away, it just got quieter.

Banks across New Zealand are starting to talk about underinsurance more seriously than they used to.

Andy recalls that in the UK, banks used to check whether your house was insured in person. New Zealand never had that same check.

What we’ve seen instead: banks increasingly requesting Rebuild Valuations when people take out or renew a mortgage, wanting to confirm the property is properly insured.

As property values fall, the loan-to-value buffer banks have relied on is shrinking, meaning more of that underinsurance risk is falling back onto the banks themselves, not just the customer.
