City Rail Link | The quiet trades beneath the city

More than 110 people from The Tile People team worked across Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau Stations.

Over several years, our team fabricated, supplied and installed more than 18,900m² of architectural surfaces, working deep below the city alongside multiple other trades.

When the stations open, most people will see the finished architecture without ever knowing how it got there.

This one is for the team behind it.

Huge congratulations to you all. We are very proud.

City Rail Link | Materials that shape place

Every material contributes to the way architecture is experienced.

For City Rail Link, basalt, large-format limestone-look porcelain slabs and bespoke terrazzo were selected to balance durability, performance and architectural expression.

Delivering those materials to the architects’ design intent required specialist sourcing, fabrication and installation. From custom water-cut detailing to precisely aligned finishes, every element was carefully
coordinated to achieve a consistent architectural outcome across all three stations.

It’s this intersection of technical delivery and material craftsmanship that continues to shape the work of The Tile People and its sister company, OBERY

City Rail Link | Crafted beneath the city

City Rail Link is more than a transport project. It’s a network of civic spaces designed to serve Auckland for generations.

Across all three stations, The Tile People delivered the architectural surface package, sourcing, fabricating, supplying and installing more than 18,900m. of basalt, large-format limestone-look porcelain slabs and bespoke terrazzo.

Working deep below street level introduced challenges rarely encountered in commercial construction.

Mechanically fixed porcelain, specialist support systems, custom water-cut detailing and complex underground logistics demanded precision from planning through to installation.

Projects like this reflect the shared commitment of The Tile People and its sister company, OBERY, to quality materials, technical expertise and enduring architecture.

18,900m². Three stations. One landmark project.

Featured in the latest issue of Architecture Aotearoa, City Rail Link (CRL) represents one of New Zealand’s most significant transport infrastructure projects.

Years in the making, The Tile People and OBERY sourced, fabricated, supplied and installed more than 18,900m² of architectural surfaces across Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau Stations. The package included basalt, limestone-look porcelain slabs and bespoke terrazzo, delivered to meet the architectural and technical demands of this landmark project.

Behind every surface are years of collaboration between architects, artists, mana whenua, engineers, contractors, fabricators and specialist trades, creating stations that will serve Auckland for generations to come.

This is the first in a series where we’ll take you behind the surfaces to share the craftsmanship, materials and collaboration behind the project.

Repost from

Yesterday was amazing.

The New Zealand International Convention Centre’s Open Day brought an incredible energy, to hear that approximately 5,000 people walked through the doors was something really special and to see the space alive with people, curiosity and connection was unforgettable.

A very special thank you to the team for trusting Sara and I with this opportunity. Having our mahi on the exterior of the building is an absolute honour. Choosing to wrap the NZICC in art was a bold and courageous decision, and I will always be grateful for that belief.

It has been nine years since I first began this project, and seeing it now completed feels surreal. What once lived as an idea is now standing strong in the world.

Thank you to .daly_in.nz and the NZICC marketing team for your kindness, enthusiasm and constant support, it has been such a pleasure getting to know you. To the core team I met at the very beginning, thank you for backing this vision and believing in my mahi from day one and for trusting I could put my best foot forward!

, thank you for your incredible support throughout this journey. It has been so special to work alongside you.

To represent and uplift tāngata whenua in this way is a profound and humbling feeling.

This project faced many battles, but overcoming those challenges is what has made it unforgettable. The obstacles shaped the strength of the outcome.

“Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe, me he maunga teitei.”“Seek the treasure you value most dearly; if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.”

And thank you to for your enthusiasm and support along the way and for the epic building! ❤️❤️❤️

Proud to deliver a refined, design-led façade at Mt Albert Grammar School.
We supplied and installed the Rieder GRC concrete skin system, integrating it seamlessly with surrounding materials and etching the school logo directly into the panels for a striking visual detail.
A strong example of how smart design and precise installation elevate a learning space.
