Good buildings start with good people.

A big thanks to Jake and the team at RapidScaff for helping keep our sites safe and our projects running smoothly. Their work creates the platform (quite literally) for everyone else to do their best work.

Fun fact: It wasn't until 2013 that scaffolding and other fall-protection systems became mandatory in New Zealand for work above 3 metres.

The old-school builders might remember a time when climbing frames, roof purlins, and good balance were considered perfectly acceptable safety equipment. Thankfully, a few things have changed since then. 👷‍♂️👏

Last week’s New Zealand Certified Builders Association Conference in Auckland was a valuable opportunity to step away from the day-to-day and spend time learning, connecting, and reflecting on where our industry is heading.

A standout moment was hearing from mental skills coach Gilbert Enoka, whose insights on pressure, resilience, and high performance really resonated. His message about focusing on the choices within our control and reframing pressure as an opportunity rather than a burden offered valuable lessons that apply well beyond sport.

Another highlight was the Apprenticeship Challenge. Watching apprentices tackle the challenge with such skill, confidence, and pride in their craft was genuinely inspiring. It was a reminder of the talent coming through and the importance of supporting the next generation of tradespeople.

We were also proud to see our director take part in a panel discussion on sustainability in construction, discussing how practical changes on site can reduce environmental impact while building greater resilience for both our homes and our industry in the future.

The conference reinforced something we strongly believe at Fairfield: great buildings are created by great people. We left Auckland inspired by the people shaping our industry and motivated to keep raising the bar in how we build.

Great homes don’t start on site, they start around a table.

Before a project begins, we sit down together with the architect, to sketch and refine the design, performance and budget, ensuring the project runs smoothly from start to finish.

We are lucky to work with Joe from WEL Architecture on several projects and with other architects who share our focus on homes that feel good to live in, sit well in their natural surroundings, and genuinely fit each client’s needs and lifestyle.

That shared approach makes every decision easier, from the big picture down to the smallest detail.

As the project takes shape, that same collaboration continues: checking in, adjusting details and solving the little challenges so the finished home works as well in real life as it did on paper.

If you are planning a new home and want this kind of team around your table, we’d love to hear from you.

Building a new home is no small thing especially on a steep, technical site like this Picton build.

From the first site walk to the final handover, our job is to make the journey feel calmer and more supported, while we quietly take care of the tricky details in the background.

We were absolutely stoked to receive this review from the owners 🫶

New cladding milestone in Havelock 🌿

We are currently installing Genia vertical weatherboards on our passive house project in Havelock. Finished with Dryden oil, the timber grain really comes to life while staying protected from the wild Marlborough Sounds weather.

Comfortable and warm on the inside, wrapped in natural timber on the outside, this passive house is really starting to feel like a home.

Huge credit to architect Joe from WEL for the thoughtful design. The combination of high‑performance detailing and natural materials is shining through beautifully on this project.

If you are thinking about low‑maintenance, natural timber cladding for your next project, we are always happy to chat through options and details.

What is it like to live in an energy‑efficient home with solar panels?

Our clients moved into their new Picton home a year ago, with solar panels, batteries and a super energy‑efficient build – and they’re pretty stoked with how it’s performing.

As they put it: “My power bill is $25/month, which I think is the basic grid connection fee. I haven’t used the heat pump yet, as I did not require it either in summer or winter.”

This grid‑tied solar system with batteries was installed by WattsOn Electrical, allowing the house to run with a near‑zero power bill and supplying essential power to the home during a power cut if needed.

The setup included:
- 15 x 440 W solar panels
- 6 kW Fronius inverter
- 11 kWh of BYD battery storage

This is what we love about combining PV with a well‑designed, efficient home: the house doesn’t need much energy to stay comfortable, so the panels and batteries easily keep up, even through the seasons.

Low bills, comfy indoor temps, and using Marlborough sunshine instead of buying power. It can’t get any better.

Installing Terra Lana wool insulation on this project and the results speak for themselves. Every wall cavity and ceiling batten packed full of New Zealand wool - warm in winter, cool in summer, and completely free of the harsh chemicals found in conventional insulation.

Terra Lana is our go-to for a reason. It's a natural, breathable product made from NZ wool that regulates moisture, improves indoor air quality, and performs exceptionally well in our Marlborough climate.

A well-insulated home isn't just more comfortable, it costs less to heat and is kinder to the environment. It's one of the most important investments you can make in a renovated or new home.

Thinking about upgrading your insulation or starting a new build? Get in touch with the team at Fairfield Construction, we'd love to help.

Steel is going up on site this week, something a little different for us.

We don’t often use steel framing in our projects, but when the design calls for it, it opens up some incredible possibilities.

The key is in the detailing. With the right approach, thermal bridging can be carefully managed so performance isn’t compromised. This will ensure the home stays warm, efficient, and true to how we like to build.

It is a pleasure working with Untitled Works Architects on this project. A thoughtful, precise design where every detail feels deliberate and well balanced.

Big thanks to Eckfords Engineering for supplying the frames, and to Accessman for helping us lift and place them safely on site.

F***y the fantail has become a regular at our Passive House project, dropping in each day to check on progress.

It’s a reminder that a good building goes beyond the home itself. It’s about creating a space that sits naturally in its environment. 🏡

A special milestone on site this morning, starting a new family home, with the concrete truck arriving bright and early.

E-Crete going down as the foundation for a home that’s designed to be warm, comfortable, and built to last. And all under a beautiful Marlborough sky to start the day.

Using E-Crete isn’t just about strong foundations, it’s also about sustainability. This low-carbon concrete helps reduce emissions in our region, so homes can be built responsibly while supporting Marlborough’s future and the environment we all love.

A huge thanks to Findlater Construction for helping us get everything ready on site, and to for supplying the E-Crete. It takes a great team to make milestones like this happen!

This home will feature a coloured polished concrete floor, with the colour carefully selected from to complement the design and bring warmth and character to the space.
