We’re Hiring!

Turner Road Architecture is looking for an experienced Architectural Designer / Technician to join our Cambridge-based team.

This full-time role would suit someone who is technically strong, detail focused and confident producing high-quality architectural documentation.

You’ll be working across a range of residential and commercial projects, alongside a friendly, experienced team that values good design, clear communication and quality documentation.

Experience with Revit and AutoCAD is preferred, along with a good understanding of NZS3604, the New Zealand Building Code and the building consent process.

If you’re looking for a long-term role in a down-to-earth architectural practice with a strong reputation, we’d love to hear from you.

Kaiapo Bay Lake House | Taupō

Perched on a ridgeline between Acacia Bay and Kinloch, Kaiapo Bay Lake House was designed to embrace panoramic views of Lake Taupō and the distant Central Plateau ranges.

A long, low form responds to the site's height restrictions, while oversized glazing and carefully framed openings connect every part of the home to the surrounding landscape.

Kaiapo Bay House | Taupō

Positioned on a prominent ridgeline site overlooking Lake Taupō, Kaiapo Bay House was carefully designed to respond to both the surrounding landscape and the site's strict planning constraints.

Restricted by a 5m height limit intended to protect the wider lake and mountain outlooks, the home adopts a long, low form that sits quietly within the landscape while still capturing expansive views from every primary space.

Spanning 427m², the layout is organised around a central covered outdoor living space, with guest accommodation positioned at one end of the home and the master suite, office and service areas at the other. Oversized glazing, clerestory windows and a light-filled northern gallery work together to draw natural light deep into the interior throughout the day.

The restrained material palette combines charred vertical larch cladding, standing seam steel and schist stone, creating a home that feels both grounded within its environment and refined in its architectural expression.

Beautifully realised by The Craftsmen, Taupō, whose attention to detail and quality of ex*****on helped bring the design to life exactly as envisioned.

For many years, cedar has been one of our favourite materials to work with, so it was a real honour to be approached by Real Cedar Canada for their latest Architect Spotlight feature.

As the home of Western Red Cedar, it feels especially meaningful to be recognised by an organisation so closely connected to a material that aligns so naturally with our approach to architecture.

The article explores our design philosophy, our approach to creating warm, site-responsive architecture, and the role cedar often plays in helping our homes feel timeless, natural and connected to their environment.

A compact home, designed as a transportable build.

We recently worked with the team at Elevate Homes to develop a bespoke 70m² home for one of their clients. The design explores how a modest footprint can still feel generous through careful form-making and material choices.

A folded roof wraps down to create a continuous outer shell, giving the building a simple, sculptural presence while also forming a sheltered outdoor living area that extends the usable living space for year-round use. Within this frame, warm vertical cedar lines the deck and façade, softening the overall expression and forming a sheltered threshold.

Large sliding openings connect the interior to the deck, allowing the main living space to flow outdoors. The palette is intentionally simple, designed to sit comfortably in its eventual semi-rural setting.

While compact in size, the project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can elevate even the smallest homes.

New coastal concept for a site in the heart of Mount Maunganui.

Designed as a permanent home for a couple with children who have flown the nest, the house responds to a retained, semi-sloping urban site and unfolds over three levels. The main living spaces open to a sheltered courtyard with a pool, outdoor fireplace and a dramatic double height atrium that filters soft northern light through curved aluminium louvres.

Soft curves, layered forms and a warm coastal palette give the house a relaxed but sculptural presence.

From Mount Paku to the pages of the Financial Times.

Our Cliff Hanger House in Tairua has been included in an international feature by the Financial Times in a story examining homes designed in response to extreme terrain.

Perched high on Mount Paku, this was never a straightforward build. The slope, the wind and the exposure shaped almost every decision. The design grew directly from the site.

We were super proud to see our small NZ practice recognised on a global stage, alongside projects from around the world responding boldly to place.

A big thank you to our clients for trusting the process. The toughest sites often ask the most of everyone involved, but they can also give the most back.
