CALLING ALL CREATIVE TEAMS — HELP US MAKE HISTORY!

Could your team help build New Zealand’s Most Creative Chain Reaction?

STEM Wana Trust is teaming up with celebrity inventor and YouTube sensation Joseph Herscher of Joseph’s Machines to bring an epic chain reaction to life in Tauranga — and we want creative teams from across Aotearoa to be part of it!

🤯 What’s the challenge?

Get your team together and show us what you can create! Build a sample chain reaction using at least 3 of the 6 simple machines.

🎥 Film your creation in a video of no more than 2 minutes and submit your entry by 15 December 2026.

🏆 We’ll select 20 teams to take part in the attempt with Joseph on the big day in January, with another 4 teams earning their place through a People’s Choice vote!

📅 When: 19 January 2027
📍 Where: Masonic Park, Tauranga
👥 Team size: 4–6 people

On the big day, selected teams will work together to build one epic long chain reaction across 12 boards, with the ultimate goal of triggering a surprise finale — with guidance from Joseph himself!

💡 Forget fancy equipment. We want creativity, clever use of reusable materials, problem-solving, teamwork and, above all, FUN!

🔥 Think your team has what it takes?

👉 Find out more and submit your entry here:

⏰ Entries close 15 December 2026 — get your team together and start building!

Tag your teammates, school, makerspace or that friend who loves making things go BOOM (safely, of course 😉).

🧵 MEET THE REPAIRER: SUE

Some things just need a little bit of TLC — and Sue is the volunteer repairer to help!

Sue brings her sewing and mending skills to our Repair Café, helping give much-loved clothes and treasured possessions a second life. She’s tackled everything from repairing clothes to mending teddy bears and dolls. Cleaning the satin lining of a presentation box containing fish knives, a dress and hemming pyjama pants to fixing a handmade knitted Jumper 🧶🪡

It’s a great reminder that a tear, some dirt, a hole or wonky hem doesn’t mean something needs to be thrown away. Sometimes, a little skill, a few stitches and some love is all it takes!

Got something that needs a mend? Bring it along to our next Repair Café!

🔧 What is a Repair Café, and how does it work? ♻️

Ever had something break and wondered whether it's worth fixing? That's exactly what our Repair Café is all about!

A Repair Café is a community event where you can bring along your broken or damaged items and work with our friendly volunteer repairers to see if they can be fixed. From faulty appliances and broken toys to torn clothing and wobbly furniture, we're all about giving things a second life!

🛠️ How does it work?
Bring it along: Book in your broken item and bring it to our Repair Café.
Meet our repairers: Our friendly volunteers will take a look and see what might be possible.
Get involved: Where possible, you'll get to work alongside the repairer, learn a few new skills and discover how things work. Give it a second life: Hopefully, you'll leave with a repaired item instead of something destined for landfill!

🌱 Why Repair Café?
It's about more than just fixing things. It's about reducing waste, learning practical skills, sharing knowledge and bringing our community together. Plus, you might discover that repairing something is easier than you think!

☕ And the best part? You can enjoy a coffee and a treat for a koha while you wait.
