Not sure what a civil construction project actually involves day to day? Here's the short version.

We start by listening and understanding the project. Then planning, consents, and risk analysis before anything moves. Then the work itself, with regular check-ins so you always know where things stand.
No surprises, no disappearing for weeks at a time.

A good before and after shows what the right groundwork can do.

This project involved reshaping a rocky waterway and placing large rock along the channel, creating a more defined route for the water to flow.

It's a good reminder that earthworks aren't always about driveways or building platforms. Sometimes it's about working with the land and water to get the job done right.

There's a lot that goes into keeping a commercial civil project moving.

Excavation, site access, traffic management, existing infrastructure and coordination with other contractors all need to work together.

The Rutherford Street Power Upgrade is a good example of the type of environment where planning and coordination matter just as much as the machinery on site.

LGW works across commercial civil construction, earthworks, drainage, roading and infrastructure throughout Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough.

Working on a live road comes with a few extra things to think about.

Before the digging starts, the team needs to consider things like:

1. Traffic management
Keeping vehicles and pedestrians moving safely around the work area.

2. Site access
Making sure machinery, workers and other contractors can get where they need to be.

3. Existing services
Knowing what is already underground before excavation gets underway.

4. Keeping the job moving
Good planning helps minimise disruption and keeps the project progressing.

Commercial civil work is about more than moving dirt. There's plenty happening around the actual excavation that needs to be right too.

Commercial work is a different ball game.

Working on an active road means there's a lot more to consider than just getting the job done.

Traffic management, site access, machinery, pedestrians, existing services and keeping the work moving all need to be considered along the way.

These photos are from our work on the Rutherford Street Power Upgrade, with the team working through the civil side of the project.

It's all about planning the work properly and keeping things moving safely and efficiently.

From small residential jobs to bigger civil work, there's a fair bit that falls under the LGW banner.

Earthworks, driveways, drainage, retaining, landscaping, forestry and subdivision work are all part of what we do across Nelson and Marlborough.

Every job's a bit different, so the first step is usually just figuring out what you're working with and what needs to be done.

Not every property needs more space. Sometimes it just needs a better plan for the space you've already got.

A change in levels, an awkward section of yard or an unused area can all be opportunities to make your property work a bit better.

Depending on what you're looking to do, that might mean:

• clearing and preparing the area
• reshaping the ground
• adding retaining
• improving drainage
• creating a more practical outdoor space

The important bit is working out what needs to happen underneath before you worry about the finishing touches.

A steep section can be a headache, or it can become useful space.

This one started with an unstable, awkward section of ground that needed more than just a tidy-up.

The job involved working into the slope, building the retaining structure and reshaping the area so it could be used properly again.

The finished result is a much more practical space, with the ground properly retained and ready for what comes next.

When a slope gives way, it can take more than just soil with it.

This slip project is a good example of why dealing with unstable ground early matters. Slips and erosion can continue to cause problems if they're left unchecked, especially around homes and steep sections.

From assessing the site through to the earthworks needed to get things back into shape, every site has its own challenges.

Got a slip, erosion issue or tricky section of ground on your property?
