🌿 Low-Maintenance Plants for the Central Coast
Looking for a beautiful landscape without a lot of maintenance? Choosing plants that are well suited for our Central Coast and South San Luis Obispo County climate can help reduce water use and ongoing upkeep.
Some great options to consider include:
💜 Lavender – Low water, fragrant and loves full sun
🌸 Salvia / Sage – Drought tolerant, colorful and great for pollinators
🌿 Westringia / Coast Rosemary – Evergreen, low water and requires minimal pruning
❤️ California Fuchsia – California native with red-orange flowers that attract hummingbirds
🌼 Yarrow – Hardy, low water and available in several colors
☀️ Bulbine – Succulent-like foliage with yellow or orange flowers
🌸 Gaura / Beeblossom – Delicate flowers with a soft, airy appearance
🔥 A reminder about fire safety: Drought-tolerant does not mean fireproof. Even water-wise and California native plants can become a fire hazard when they are allowed to accumulate dry leaves, dead branches, or other combustible material.
Regular maintenance is still important. Remove dead and dry growth, keep plants properly pruned and spaced, clear fallen leaves and debris, and avoid allowing vegetation to become overly dense—especially around structures.
The goal is not just a low-maintenance landscape, but a landscape that is healthy, water-wise and properly maintained with fire safety in mind.
🌱 The right plants + proper maintenance can make a big difference.
