MWM DesignGroup is proud to announce that five of our EMS stations have achieved LEED certification, including two LEED Gold and three LEED Silver designations.

This achievement reflects our commitment to sustainable design, operational excellence, and creating high-performing facilities that support our first responders and the communities they serve.

As Senior Architect Owen Harrod, PhD, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, explains:

"Achieving LEED certification requires thoughtful planning from the earliest stages of design through construction and occupancy. These stations incorporate sustainable strategies that improve energy efficiency, conserve resources, and create healthier environments for our first responders. Earning certification for five EMS stations reflects the strong collaboration between our design, construction, and operational teams and demonstrates our commitment to serving our communities responsibly."

Thank you to the project, operations, construction, and design teams whose collaboration made this accomplishment possible.

Intern Takeover | Week 3: Deborah

One of the biggest surprises during my internship at MWM DesignGroup has been discovering just how much goes into a project long before construction ever begins. Before this experience, I didn’t realize how many moving parts are involved—from permitting and land surveying to architecture, civil engineering, and landscape architecture. Each role plays an essential part and getting informed by employees who work in all different compartments and seeing their work is truly fascinating.

Being part of MWM has shown me that a successful project isn’t just about creating something that looks good—it’s about teamwork, communication, and building a strong foundation for every project. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from such incredible workers and to gain insight into an industry that truly shapes the communities we live in.

Intern Takeover | Week 2: Harani
Since working at MWM DesignGroup, I think I have truly seen and experienced what a healthy and supportive corporate setting looks like and what a positive environment it can create as a result.

They always ensure that all their employees feel seen and recognized, allowing them to do their best work and collaborate effectively with each other. It has been truly inspirational to see the immense commitment that is put toward workers' wellbeing and mental health.

Furthermore, MWM also puts great emphasis on assisting and improving the communities around them. Not only do their field projects help foster inclusion towards physically impaired groups, the company also regularly takes part in service projects and volunteer activities. In fact, just recently, they hosted a school supply drive where numerous employees took part in contributing donations for the cause.

I am incredibly grateful to have gotten the opportunity to experience this wonderful environment and will forever remember my time here.

Intern Takeover | Week 2: Harani
My name is Harani Karne, and I am currently a rising junior at L.C. Anderson High School. When I first started at MWM DesignGroup this summer, I was told the interns would be taking site visits during the duration of the internship.

Initially, I saw this as an opportunity to learn the various ways MWM has impacted communities in Austin. However, after participating in the site visit, I learned more than I could have ever imagined regarding the numerous components that go into the construction process and the problem solving skills required to navigate the many challenges encountered.

I have gained invaluable knowledge about the meticulous engineering process that ensures the project accounts for the whole community, as well as the job of a civil engineer, which involves both structural considerations and a creative mindset in order to integrate new solutions into project designs.

Going forward to the remainder of my internship, I am so excited to continue to learn new things and broaden my knowledge of the world of architecture.

Intern Takeover | Week 1: Annie

Before I started working at MWM DesignGroup, I didn't realize how many new things I would learn on my journey as an intern and everything that goes on behind the scenes of an office.

As I’ve been working here, I’ve noticed just how many different responsibilities go into creating the perfect office environment. Whether it's creating employee engagement activities, learning how to stay organized, event planning, or even just taking the time to sort some files, it’s safe to say that I’ve had my fair share with learning throughout my internship.

I plan to apply the experiences and knowledge that I've learned from my time here at MWM to my future career and my life outside of work.

Intern Takeover | Week 1: Annie

When I first heard that I would be running a whole event for MWM DesignGroup as part of my main project during my internship, let's just say that I was shocked.

I was told that I would be handling the planning, graphics, activity, RSVPs, announcements, and the actual event of course, which meant that I had LOTS of work to do. This event is called the International Food Luncheon, where employees optionally sign up to bring a dish from their culture, childhood, or just something that they love, and everyone gathers together to enjoy the delicious dishes, compete in a difficult game to win a prize, celebrate Architecture week, and socialize with fellow coworkers.

After two weeks of hard work, stress, and employees forgetting to sign up even after countless announcements, event day was finally here. The event went very well with little to no conflicts, apart from a couple of groups attempting to cheat during the activity, which was not surprising. Jokes aside, this event was so incredibly fun and fulfilling to run and be a part of, and I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity!

🎉Congratulations to Julia Harrod, P.E., F.NSPE, on completing her year as President of the National Society of Professional Engineers!

This past year, Julia represented NSPE and the professional engineering community with incredible dedication. Through state society visits, partner organization events, conferences, board meetings, student programs, awards ceremonies, and member engagements, she spent the year connecting with engineers, volunteers, students, and leaders across the country and beyond.

Her travels and engagements included visits with groups in California, Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming, Alaska, Oregon, South Dakota, Delaware, Wisconsin, Guam, Japan, Hawaii, and many more. Along the way, Julia highlighted the important work being done by state societies, celebrated NSPE Fellows and award recipients, spoke on topics including ethics, leadership, licensure, time management, financial metrics, and advocacy, and continued encouraging engineers to get involved in the profession.

Julia’s year as President also came during an important time of transition for NSPE. Under her leadership, NSPE strengthened engagement with state societies and members, supported committee and staff accomplishments, and welcomed Christina Lewellen, MBA, FASAE, CAE as NSPE’s new Executive Director and CEO.

We are proud to celebrate Julia’s service, leadership, and commitment to advancing the engineering profession. Congratulations, Julia, on an incredible year!👷‍♂️
