PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨
Please look out for the people around you — your parents, grandparents, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to scams.
Yesterday, I met the sweetest older woman while looking at a problem in her basement. During our conversation, she mentioned that her water heater had just been replaced and that this time she “upgraded to the commercial model.” The problem was… it wasn’t a commercial unit at all. It was a standard residential water heater.
Then she told me what she paid.
It was nearly 6x what we would charge for the same job.
Now, I normally don’t pay much attention to price differences between plumbing companies. Every business has different overhead, different service levels, and different ways of operating. My prices may not always be the cheapest either — but they are a fair reflection of what it costs to run a licensed, insured, professional business and still make an honest profit.
But this situation was different.
This was someone clearly taking advantage of a vulnerable person.
Not only was the customer sold something that wasn’t what she was promised, but the workmanship itself wasn’t even close to industry standard.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there claiming to be plumbers who are really just salespeople. There are also many unlicensed and uninsured contractors who either don’t know how to do the work properly… or worse, are intentionally scamming people.
Please look after one another.
Ask trusted friends and family for recommendations. Get second opinions. And don’t let a pushy salesperson pressure you into making a decision if something doesn’t feel right.
There are still honest contractors out there who truly care about doing things the right way and treating people fairly.
