“Harnessing the Power of AI and Apps On Your Smart Phone for Garden and Plant Use.”

Our speaker for the evening will be Pam Borso who will talk about harnessing the power of AI and apps on your smart phone for garden and plant use. Pam will compare and contrast various plant identification apps by explaining their efficiency and how to best use them.

Pam is a Native Plant Steward and is active in the local Audubon Society. She’s spoken to our Club before about supporting birds in the landscape. Pam uses iNaturalist for plant identification in the wild and will explain the benefits of alternative applications for garden use. Now is the time for the savvy gardener to learn the magic of apps for better plant identification and management. Winter is a good time to practice. Please join us!!!

October Speaker:
Alison Kutz, owner of Sound Horticulture in Bellingham, WA

Topic:
“Natural Pest Management Through Biodiversity in the PNW Garden: Everyone has a Role to Play.”

The second meeting of the Birchwood Garden Club 2026-2027 season will be held October 7, 2026, in the Rotunda Room of the Old City Hall Museum, 121 Prospect St., Bellingham, WA 98225. Doors open at 6:30 PM.

Sound Horticulture was established in 2000 to reduce the use of toxic pesticides in the environment by supplying biological controls for managing pests and diseases. As founder and owner, with extensive nursery experience, Alison can
recommend a variety of options to, as she says, "fill in our integrated toolbox with solutions to our key pests here."

The adage, build it and they will come, holds special truth when it comes to backyard gardens. Building habitat for our beneficial insects, birds, and bats is becoming a focal part of our gardens these days. Alison will explore these concepts and also discuss where other interventions for natural pest management may come into play. Please join us!

Speaker: Karen Chapman, "Ideas for American Gardens from England."

Born in England, I grew up with a trowel in my hand.
After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1996 I joined one of the leading garden nurseries as a garden plant specialist. Helping hundreds of customers create beautiful combinations of plants to enhance their outdoor living spaces was always a delight. Ten years later I established Le jardinet in order to provide a service that takes all the time, stress and guesswork out of the design process for you.
In the recent past I have taught container gardening at Edmonds Community College, and continue to teach both container and landscape design in occasional workshops and events as well offering a range of online learning opportunities .
I frequently give presentations at flower & garden shows, trade conferences, horticultural organizations, nurseries, and garden clubs, and now extend my passion for sharing great gardens by leading garden tours both in the United States and to some of my favorite international destinations with a special focus on my native England.
When I’m not teaching garden design or talking about it I am usually writing about it, and my articles and designs have been featured in many national gardening publications including Fine Gardening, Country Gardens, Sunset, and Garden Design. I have co-authored two books with Christina Salwitz: the award winning Fine Foliage (St. Lynn’s Press, 2013) and the highly acclaimed Gardening with Foliage First (Timber Press, 2017), while my latest book Deer-Resistant Design (Timber Press, 2019) is popular with deer-challenged gardeners everywhere.
Specializing in creating artistic plant combinations with a four season foliage framework, functional outdoor living spaces and deer resistant, summer-dry designs, it would give me great pleasure to help you create your perfect jardinet and share my love of gardening with you.
