When we asked you if you were ready for the big reveal, did any of you have an idea that it would be THIS big? Some of you knew what Roy had been working on. The final product has been in the making for the last 3 years. That’s right, THREE. So what? Perfection takes time. Well, time and retirement. What started as a fantasy for our customer was turned into a reality by our Roy.
We want to start by giving a shout out to our crew for their hard work alongside Roy, this project couldn’t have been completed without them; “Junior” (Roy’s son) for being yelled at by his Dad but always coming back to work and to Joey (our flooring master). To David Gamble for his help with stripping and polishing the outside, to Shew Brothers Welding and Fab for various metal pieces, Sterling Mattress Factory for their willingness to design a mattress for this space, Tyler Pingholt from Empire Insulation for the spray foam, Mike McCrary for welding the frame and Mark Kuhns for throwing our name out there.
So, without further ado- may we present for your viewing pleasure, this fully restored 1967 Airstream Overlander.
This restoration began with the removal of everything inside this trailer, and we do mean everything, leaving us with an empty shell and a rusted frame. This American Classic was in rough shape but after cutting out around 8 feet of frame and welding in a new one she was as solid as she’d been in ’67. Sandblasting and undercoating finished up the frame before fresh subfloor was laid.
Once the bones were back in place, all new wiring and plumbing were installed which included a tankless hot water heater, freshwater and blackwater tanks as well as 2 grey water tanks (which were not original to this model).
Spray foam was installed to keep the inside of the Airstream at a comfortable temperature and window tint was also applied, per our customer’s request, to further aid in warding off the heat. A new AC unit was installed on the roof, just like the original, except this one demanded that the hole be made larger and the roof reinforced. A rock guard was custom fabricated by us to fit the front window as the original model was no longer in production.
The interior of this beauty was then sealed with white aluminum panels that were riveted in place and custom wood trim around the windows that was steamed to seamlessly match the contour of the trailer. In addition to the trim around the windows, a custom wood runner can be seen on the ceiling, also at the request of our customer.
In the common area you will find a seating space with phone chargers built into the arm for easy device charging and underneath the battery backups may be easily accessed via a concealed slide out tray.
Hardwood bamboo flooring was laid throughout and is complimented by custom made hardwood maple cabinets which feature soft close hinges and door slides.
A stunning butcher block countertop can be seen in the kitchen wrapping a dual gas stove. Black granite is featured in the office area, adding sophistication and luxury to the workspace.
The sleeping area in this Airstream had to be custom designed with a specially made mattress and bed frame that, you guessed it, was made by us.
Down the hall you will find a wet bath with tiled shower and new medicine cabinet with adjustable shelves; a pocket door was installed to make the most of the limited space.
The outside aluminum of this Land Yacht had to be stripped of the plastic coating before it could be restored to its original shine. The lettering and badges were refinished and hand painted to restore their charm. New electric brakes were also wired in and installed with a battery backup as an added safety feature. The electric jack was also replaced to ensure that it could support this 5480 lb behemoth.
THANK YOU to our customers on this project for their trust and patience. We hope you enjoy this Airstream as much as we’ve enjoyed working on it.
THANK YOU to everyone that continues to support Roy in what he does, has done and is doing. Completing this project is just “one more notch” in our belt and we can’t wait to take you all along with us to see what comes next.
