"How often should I change my air filter?" It's one of the most common HVAC questions, and there’s no single, simple answer. Here are a few things that can affect the lifespan of your filter:
✅ Filter type. A filter's thickness and minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating affect how quickly it fills up. Standard 1-inch filters are often replaced every one to three months, while thicker pleated filters can last six months or longer.
✅ Pets. Pet hair and dander can clog a filter much faster. Even one pet can noticeably shorten a filter's life, and homes with several pets may need changes as often as every few weeks.
✅ Allergies. Allergy or asthma concerns may call for more frequent changes. Swapping filters more often keeps dust, pollen, and other irritants from building up and circulating through your home.
✅ System runtime. A system that runs often, like during a cold snap, works its filter harder. The more air that moves through your system, the faster the filter collects particles.
Additionally, if you see heavy buildup, notice weaker airflow, or your system runs longer than usual, it's probably time for a new one. Always follow the guidance from your system and filter manufacturers when replacing a filter.
