When the museum relocated to City Park after 30 years downtown, they wanted an entrance that felt like nowhere else. We designed an elliptical observation deck overlooking the lagoon, giving visitors a front-row seat to local wildlife and plantings before they even step inside.

PermaTrak has spent 16 years focusing exclusively on precast concrete boardwalks, and in that time has installed over 700 structures.

Andrew Craig, our Director of Engineering, credits a lot of that focus to advice from his dad: "If you try to do everything, you won't do anything well."

If you picture concrete, you probably picture rectangular panels, which is exactly why people assume precast boardwalks can't handle a curve or wrap around a tree.

Here's the reality: PermaTrak doesn't build boardwalks from a stack of identical rectangular pieces sitting in a factory.

Every boardwalk is custom-designed around the site, matching whatever alignment the designer needs and the landscape requires.

The trick is trapezoidal pieces. Put together, they mimic a curve, letting the system create smooth, radial geometries wherever the site calls for one, whether that's winding around a mature tree or following a natural shoreline.

Progress update from Gwinnett County, Georgia! 🎥

Beaver Ruin Wetland Park, designed by CPL and built by Strack, Inc., is now more than halfway complete. Once finished, the site will feature:

➡️ 7,000 feet of elevated boardwalk

➡️ 5 scenic lookouts overlooking the wetland

➡️ A closed-loop trail connecting the whole community

When a boardwalk needs to work around trees, PermaTrak's engineers take one of two approaches, depending on what's below ground.

1️⃣ Map out where the tree roots actually are, then place slender, deep foundation elements (usually helical piers) in the gaps between them, going below the shallow root structure to

2️⃣ For a dense root zone or one large, high-priority tree, use precast footings instead. These pedestal footings are cast off-site in the plant, then simply set down on top of the sensitive root zone. No excavation, no digging into the roots at all.
Which approach gets used comes down to the project and the trees around it.

Concrete boardwalks aren't a one-size-fits-all system, and that's exactly why they hold up everywhere from moderate climates to coastal saltwater to extreme cold.

Instead of redesigning the whole structure for tougher site conditions, PermaTrak adjusts two things: the concrete mix and the rebar.

For strength, that means more rebar or a higher-strength mix where a project demands it (standard specs work great in moderate climates).

For durability, air entrainment and admixtures tailor the concrete itself to coastal, hot, or cold environments, while epoxy-coated or chromium-infused rebar adds corrosion resistance where saltwater or harsh weather are a factor.

Concrete doesn't rot. It doesn't splinter. And unlike timber, it doesn't come with a maintenance schedule.

There's no set plan to replace pieces or components over time. The only real recommendation: periodic power washing to keep debris from building up (in shaded, wooded environments, decomposing debris can create a slippery biofilm, so keeping the surface clean handles that too).

Our Director of Engineering, Andrew Craig, put it best: "My wife and I bought a 35-year-old home last year. We're already on our second deck. But the driveway? Original to the house. I'll get around to power washing it one of these days."

Install it once & walk away. That's the whole plan.

Cost is always part of the conversation when a boardwalk project kicks off. On day one, timber usually does come in cheaper than concrete, especially on smaller projects.

But day one isn't the full story.

One of our clients ran the numbers on their boardwalk: the concrete option was about 30% more upfront.

Fast forward 20 years, and the timber option had cost twice as much as the concrete once life cycle costs were factored in.

The flip is all about longevity. Concrete boardwalks last 50-75 years. Timber is closer to 15.

If you're only comparing quotes, you're only seeing part of the picture.

Building through a federal park means the permit conversation starts before the design does.

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park needed to replace a narrow, 4 foot wide boardwalk that no longer met accessibility standards, all while protecting the wetland habitat around it. The work zone was only 20 feet wide, and the ground was so soft that survey equipment got stuck during the initial site visit.

PermaTrak worked with Martin and Martin to widen the path to 8 feet using a hybrid top down construction method.

Crews set helical pier foundations first, then installed the precast beams and treads from above, avoiding the need for heavy equipment to move through the sensitive wetland.
