Last Friday, we invited several of our clients to attend Cincinnati Preservation's annual Fall Forum with us. Featured speaker Donovan Rypkema presented The Surprising Economic Power of Preservation and introduced Cincinnati Preservation's first-ever Economic Impact of Historic Preservation Study, completed by PlaceEconomics.

The study puts numbers behind something we see firsthand in our work: historic preservation is more than protecting our architectural heritage. It drives investment, creates jobs, supports local businesses, and strengthens our neighborhoods.

At New Republic Architecture, we’re proud to play a role in preserving Cincinnati’s architectural legacy through our historic preservation work. And thank you to Cincinnati Preservation for bringing our community together and reinforcing the important role historic preservation plays in Cincinnati's future.

Yesterday, we held our annual NEW REPUBLIC company retreat, but we mixed things up this year!

Tablespoon Cooking Co. in Findlay Market hosted us for an Iron Chef-style cooking competition. Working in teams, we put our creativity, collaboration, and culinary skills to the test in a risotto showdown.

Congratulations to the winning team, whose caramelized onion and gruyere risotto took top honors!
After the competition, we headed to a nearby rooftop to celebrate, enjoy some downtime, and spend time together outside the office.

Our annual retreat is always a chance to connect as a team, have some fun, and strengthen the relationships that make working together so rewarding. This year, we just added a little friendly competition to the recipe!

Vandalia Point has received a Heritage Ohio Award for Best Infill Project!

Located at the Vandalia Triangle in Northside, the project brings 52 new affordable homes to the neighborhood while preserving two existing historic buildings on the site. New construction was thoughtfully designed opposite the Crosley flatiron building and former warehouse, creating a development that respects the character of the neighborhood while adding much-needed housing.

We’re proud to see Vandalia Point recognized and grateful to our partners at OTRCH and Urban Sites for their collaboration and commitment to making this project a reality.

Members of the New Republic stepped in to support Over-the-Rhine Community Housing for Walk Our Blocks, where we represented two of our OTRCH projects: Mid Line and Pleasant House.

Mid Line will bring 57 affordable apartments to the Vine street corridor, pairing new construction with the rehabilitation of a mid-19th-century building. Pleasant House will create 25 new permanent supportive housing units on Pleasant Street in Over-the-Rhine.

We’re grateful to partner with Over-the-Rhine Community Housing and the important work they do to create and preserve affordable housing in our community. We’re looking forward to seeing both of these projects come out of the ground!

Some of the best progress in a historic rehabilitation is about revealing what was already there.

At the Black Horse Inn in Morristown, OH, the original hardwood floors on the ground-floor level are being restored to preserve the character, patina and craftsmanship found in the nearly 200-year-old building. This part of the inn will now feature an Underground Railroad Museum on the main floor. Rather than replacing historic material, restoration allows these floors to remain part of the Inn's story as the building is adapted for a new purpose.

Unit framing is happening at the Reid Building!

With metal tracking underway, the future unit layouts are becoming visible across the open floor plate. The new walls will organize these historic interiors into modern apartments while the building’s existing 1860's structure and character remain very much part of the experience.

This building will include 37 market-rate apartments and is part of the larger Reid Flats project, which will bring 91 new residences to downtown Cincinnati.

Progress at the Black Horse Inn: framing is underway for a new exterior exit stair, one of the contemporary interventions helping prepare this almost 200-year-old historic building, located in Morristown Ohio, for its next chapter.

Working within an existing historic structure often means finding thoughtful ways to accommodate modern code and life-safety requirements while preserving the character of the original building. The new stair will provide required egress while allowing the historic spaces within the Inn to remain largely intact.

Today we celebrated the ribbon cutting of Gloria’s Place, a new 44-unit permanent supportive housing community in Over-the-Rhine.

Located at the corner of Dunlap and Henry Streets within the Over-the-Rhine Historic District, the project transforms a compact urban site into much-needed housing, with resident services and shared amenities on the ground floor and a central courtyard that creates protected outdoor space for residents.

Developed and managed by Over-the-Rhine Community Housing (OTRCH) and built by Model Construction, Gloria’s Place was supported through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. New Republic is proud to have provided architectural services for another great OTRCH project that serves a critical need in our community.

Congratulations to Over-the-Rhine Community Housing, The Model Group, and the many partners who brought Gloria’s Place to completion.

The Wicks at Vintage Club Phase III is coming out of the ground in Montgomery, with framing now underway on the final condominium building in the community.

Developed by Traditions Building & Development Group, this phase will add 18 single-floor condominium residences to The Wicks, a walkable, village-style community within the larger Vintage Club development.

New Republic worked with the Traditions team to translate the project’s established design direction into a coordinated, buildable set of construction documents. We’re excited to see those drawings taking shape on site.

Jobsite tours are one of the ways our team gets out of the office and learns firsthand from the buildings we work on. We toured the Reid-Longworth Building on West Fourth Street, built in 1869 as a hotel before later serving as a manufacturing and wholesale facility. The building is part of Reid Flats, a larger ModelGroup redevelopment encompassing multiple historic buildings across Cincinnati's Central Business District and Over-the-Rhine.
Through the historic tax credit rehabilitation, the building will become 37 market-rate apartments while carefully restoring its historic character. Small, non-historic windows will be replaced with monumental double-hung windows that restore the full height of the original openings, reversing a previous renovation that infilled the lower portions with paneling and added non-historic transoms.
Tours like this help our team better understand the craftsmanship, challenges, and thoughtful preservation strategies that bring historic buildings into their next chapter.
