☕ Deck Thoughts: Episode #247
You walk out onto your deck with a cup of coffee.
You sit down.
You take a deep breath.
And then...
You notice:
🔹 That loose board.
🔹 The railing that wiggles just a little.
🔹 The stain that didn't survive another Illinois winter.
🔹 The one step that makes a different sound than all the others.
Suddenly you're not drinking coffee anymore.
You're conducting a full deck inspection.
It's amazing how quickly a relaxing morning can turn into a home improvement strategy session.
If your deck has been quietly adding items to your "I should probably deal with that..." list, maybe it's time to stop thinking about it and start planning for it.
Until then, we'll be over here pretending not to notice the things around our own houses that need attention too.

👇 Be honest...
What's the first thing you notice when you walk out onto your deck?

As Deck Safety Month comes to an end, we just wanted to say this:

Thank you. ❤️

Thank you for following along.
Thank you for asking questions.
Thank you for caring about the safety of your outdoor spaces.

At TL Decks, we believe a deck should be more than beautiful. It should be built to last, built correctly, and built with the people using it in mind every single step of the way.

Whether your deck is brand new, 25 years old, wood, composite, large, small, screened in, or simply your favorite place to drink coffee in the morning… we hope you take a few moments this season to really look at it.

Safety matters. Craftsmanship matters. Family moments out there matter too.

And if you ever need us, you know where to find us. ☀️🛠️

Here’s to a safe summer and many nights spent outside.

Deck Safety Month may be wrapping up, but deck safety itself never really takes a season off. 👷‍♂️🪵

One of the biggest surprises we run into?
A deck can look completely fine from the top… while underneath tells a very different story.

Loose ledger boards.
Rusting hardware.
Rot hidden beneath boards.
Weak framing that no one sees until it becomes a problem.

Your deck holds your family, your friends, your grill, your patio furniture, your memories… it deserves more than a quick glance once a year.

If your deck is older, feels “off,” wobbles, or simply hasn’t been inspected in years, now is a great time to have it looked at.

Because peace of mind feels a whole lot better than wondering if that stair is about to make a dramatic exit. 😅

Did you spend the weekend out on your deck thinking:

👉 “Wow… we really need a new deck.”
👉 “This thing has seen better days.”
👉 “How many more years can this staircase wobble before it becomes a carnival ride?” 😅

You are definitely not alone.

Every year after Memorial Day, we hear from homeowners who finally got outside for the season and realized their outdoor space just isn’t working anymore.

The good news?
NOW is the perfect time to start planning for late summer and early fall projects.

So next Memorial Day, instead of wishing for a better deck…
you could already be sitting on it. ☀️🍔🔥

Whether you’re dreaming about:
✔️ More entertaining space
✔️ Low-maintenance composite decking
✔️ Better stairs and railings
✔️ A safer structure
✔️ Or just a backyard you actually LOVE walking out to…

TL Decks is here to help bring it to life.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Memorial Day is more than the start of summer. It is a day of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for those who gave everything so we could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

From all of us at TL Decks, thank you to the fallen heroes and the families who carry their legacy forward every day. ❤️🤍💙

We hope everyone has a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Memorial Day weekend unofficially kicks off outdoor living season… and honestly? Your deck knows it. 😎

This is the weekend for:
✔️ Burgers on the grill
✔️ Bare feet on warm deck boards
✔️ Kids running through sprinklers
✔️ Late-night conversations under the stars

At TL Decks, we don’t just build decks. We build the place where summer memories happen. ❤️

Whether your outdoor space is already party-ready or still sitting on your “someday” list, we hope your weekend is full of sunshine, good food, and people you love.

Happy Saturday from the crew at TL Decks!

🎉 Friday Trivia Answer Time! 🎉

Earlier this week we asked:

❓ TRUE or FALSE:
The gaps between your deck boards actually serve an important safety purpose.

✅ ANSWER: TRUE!

Those small gaps between deck boards help:
✔️ Drain water away properly
✔️ Allow airflow under and between boards
✔️ Reduce moisture buildup
✔️ Help prevent rot, mold, warping, and premature deterioration

Without proper spacing, water can get trapped — and over time that can lead to major structural problems hiding where homeowners can’t easily see them.

Sometimes the smallest details in deck building are doing the biggest jobs behind the scenes 👀

That’s why during Deck Safety Month we love educating homeowners not just about how a deck LOOKS… but how it FUNCTIONS safely for years to come.

Thanks to everyone who played along this week! 🙌

Happy Thursday from TL Decks ☀️

This morning, a podcast got us thinking about perspective. One line really stuck with us:

Being challenged in life is inevitable. Being defeated is optional.

The speaker spoke about a simple pencil and talked about how most people only see it one way… something to write with.
But others might see:
✏️ A drumstick
✏️ A bookmark
✏️ Tiny campfire kindling
✏️ A mini weightlifting bar for a very ambitious mouse 🐭💪

Same pencil. Different perspective.

Honestly, building decks is a lot like that.

Sometimes we walk into a backyard and all a homeowner sees is:
▪️ A slope
▪️ An awkward layout
▪️ Old framing
▪️ A space they’ve given up on

We see possibility.
A gathering place.
A quiet morning coffee spot.
A future graduation party.
A place where memories will happen for years.

Challenges are part of every build… and part of life too. Weather delays happen. Materials get backordered. Plans change. But creativity, problem-solving, and perspective are what keep things moving forward.

So today’s Thursday reminder:
When life hands you a “pencil,” maybe it’s worth asking…
“What else could this become?” ❤️

And now we can’t stop picturing a mouse bench pressing in the gym. Thanks, podcast. 😂

🚨 Deck Safety Month Monday Trivia Time! 🚨

Let’s switch things up a bit this week…

Not all deck safety issues are dramatic or obvious. Sometimes the smallest details are the ones protecting your family every single day.

So here’s today’s trivia question 👇

❓ TRUE or FALSE:
The gaps between your deck boards actually serve an important safety purpose.

Think you know the answer? Drop your guess below! ⬇️

We’ll give the answer later this week along with WHY those little gaps matter more than most homeowners realize 👀

Hint: It’s not just about rainwater.
