Maverick doesn’t clock out — supervises every panel, holds his post while I’m elbow deep in a 480V feed, and still finds time for belly rubs between terminations. Some dogs fetch balls. Mine fetches peace of mind.

Pest are drawn to electron’s. Termites, beavers, rats, you name it.
You can see the termites have really built up around the MOV. Eventually they will break the dielectric and the phase will flash over to ground.

This is why those green cabinets setting around in public- DO TOUCH, SET ON , or MESS WITH unless you’re re ready to take a ride on lightning.

Soft Start Conversion – Root Cause and Resolution

The original reduced-voltage starter used a transformer to ramp the motor up gradually. Each time the drive belt slipped, the resulting motor surge overloaded and eventually burned out the transformer. It was replaced with a solid-state soft start, which ramps voltage electronically and has no transformer to fail. With the soft start in place, a slipping belt now causes the unit to trip rather than sustain damage.

That trip response exposed the belt slippage as the underlying issue. In correcting it, the belt was over-tightened, which increased mechanical load on the saw beyond what the soft start could drive through during acceleration, resulting in an overload trip.

The overload trip setting was raised from 87A to 95A, and the soft start’s dip-switch parameters were adjusted incrementally — increasing starting torque, extending the ramp time, and testing a kick-start pulse — until the motor reliably reached full speed under load.

Final configuration:
• Ramp time: 20 seconds
• Initial torque: 65%
• Overload class: 10
• FLA setting: 95A
• Belt tension: ~3/8” deflection at the midpoint of the longest span (free-turning, no slip or bind)

Summary: The soft start did not resolve the belt problem directly — it eliminated the failure mode (transformer burnout) that had previously masked the belt issue, allowing it to be identified and corrected properly.

Widow Maker. The problem is there isn’t a clear line load. Utilities want touch them, when Pike went public and dropped their commercial customers I inherited some interesting things to say the least.

I kept Pilot Mountain’s 12,470 volt going until Duke finally established new cables to the top. 5 volts to Lightning⚡️
