Today’s irrigation service call in Gulf Shores involved a pump that would no longer prime.

Upon arrival, we found that the customer had recently replaced the pump themselves. The 2 inch male adapter on the suction side had a vacuum leak, and the existing check valve was also beginning to fail. Together, these issues were allowing air into the suction side and preventing the pump from establishing prime.

We rebuilt the upper portion of the suction line, corrected the leaking connection, and installed a new check valve. After clearing the trapped air from the system and getting the pump properly primed, it built pressure and ran exactly as it should.

The irrigation system is now back up and running with strong, consistent pressure.

One of today’s projects in Fairhope involved correcting a major coverage issue along a small strip of grass on the side of the home.

The irrigation system was installed earlier this year, but this area was left with nowhere near adequate coverage. We added five new 4 inch spray heads to the existing zone and equipped them with MP1000 rotators to provide consistent, efficient coverage throughout the entire strip.

Proper head spacing and coverage make all the difference. Even a newer irrigation system can struggle to keep turf healthy when those fundamentals are missed.

The Archaeological Dig: Lawn Genie Dynasty, Circa 1994

First service call of the day in Fairhope turned into a little irrigation archaeology.

We were originally called out for a leaking valve manifold. Once we excavated everything, it became pretty clear this manifold had seen several decades of service and at least one previous round of repairs. We even found two old Lawn Genie valves still hanging on.

Since everything was already exposed, our customer decided it made more sense to rebuild the entire manifold rather than repair one leak and potentially have us back out for another failure later.

We removed the old manifold and rebuilt it with all new valves, fittings, and PVC. Due to the way the original system was constructed, we weren’t able to give the valves quite as much spacing as we would prefer without significantly expanding the scope of the project. Within the customer’s budget and the existing layout, though, this was a huge improvement and should be much easier to service going forward.

A few decades of irrigation history removed and a fresh start put back in the ground.

Retirement. Not failure.

Today’s 3rd service call took us to Old Town Daphne where we found an old Richdel irrigation valve that was stuck closed and keeping the zone from running. Judging by the age and style, this valve may have been in service for around 30 years.

We removed the old valve and replaced it with a new Rain Bird DV valve, restoring the zone to proper operation.

Not a bad run for the old Richdel, but after a few decades of service, it was definitely time for retirement.

More irrigation surgery today in Fairhope.

We found a leaking lateral line that had originally been installed only about three feet from the base of a large oak tree. Over time, one of the roots grew into the piping and eventually snapped a 90-degree fitting completely in half.

With a root this large, removing it wasn’t an option, and there wasn’t much room to work with. We rerouted the lateral up and over the root to get some separation and help prevent the same problem from happening again.

Definitely not our favorite type of repair, but sometimes you have to work with what the site gives you. Fortunately, this is in a low-traffic area, so the new routing shouldn’t cause any issues.

First of four service calls today was a leaking irrigation main line. Once we dug it up, we found the culprit. A large tree root had wrapped itself tightly around the pipe and put enough stress on it to cause a failure.

Before we could make the plumbing repair, we had to do a little careful “root surgery” to free the line without creating any more damage. Once we got the root separated and the pipe exposed, we were able to make the repair and get everything back in working order.

Tree roots and irrigation lines definitely don’t always play nice.

Service call #4 today!

This customer needed a dedicated shutoff valve for their irrigation system. The original installers either never added one, or it had been buried and lost over the years.

We started by digging in front of the meter where we would normally expect to find the irrigation connection, but there was no shutoff in sight. Rather than digging up the yard trying to locate where the irrigation tied into the house main, we went with the cleaner and more practical solution: adding a dedicated shutoff directly at the irrigation manifold.

Now the entire irrigation system can be isolated quickly without shutting off water to the house, making future repairs and maintenance much easier.

Sometimes the best solution is simply making the system better and easier to service going forward.

Spent part of the morning working on one of our newly acquired commercial properties in Fairhope. Replacing heads, adjusting for coverage, and all around catching everything up so it’s easy to service on our future quarterly inspections.

Today’s customer in Daphne had just installed new sod but was struggling with poor irrigation coverage. The system was divided into 7 zones with only 2–3 rotors per zone, leaving large dry areas throughout the lawn. With a limited budget, a full renovation wasn’t the best option.

After testing the water supply, we found the property was fed by a strong well producing over 16 gallons per minute. That gave us an opportunity to maximize the system’s performance. We replaced the old, worn-out rotors with new K-Rain RPS 75 rotors equipped with 8 GPM nozzles, giving each head nearly a 60-foot radius. The result was complete head-to-head coverage across the new turf without adding zones or making costly changes.

Sometimes it takes a little creativity and the right hydraulic calculations to turn an underperforming system into one that works exactly as it should.
