Today we completed an irrigation efficiency upgrade for one of our HOA properties in Gulf Shores!

The property’s 21 existing spray heads were struggling to provide adequate coverage for the turf and landscape beds, while also contributing to overspray and unnecessary water waste.

To improve performance, we converted all 21 spray heads to high efficiency MP Rotator nozzles. These nozzles deliver water at a slower, more controlled rate, allowing for more uniform coverage, better soil absorption, and reduced runoff.

We also made coverage adjustments throughout the remaining zones, replaced several worn rotors, and fine tuned the controller’s watering schedule to better accommodate the cooler temperatures and reduced watering demands of the fall season.

A service call in Daphne today started with a customer reporting that her sprinkler system was stuck running.

After troubleshooting the irrigation system, we identified a faulty control valve and completed the necessary repair. But our inspection didn’t stop there.

Further testing revealed that the well pump was also running continuously due to a worn out pressure switch. We replaced the pressure switch along with the pressure gauge to restore proper pump operation.

With both issues resolved, we tested the system to verify everything was operating as it should.

This is why thorough troubleshooting matters. What initially appeared to be a single irrigation issue turned out to be two separate problems that needed attention.

Today’s service call took us to Point Clear for a challenging mainline repair!

Our client had a 2” mainline leak in an extremely tight space between a high-voltage electrical box and the driveway. A previous repair had failed, leaving very little pipe to work with. With limited room and no margin for error, getting this repair right the first time was critical.

To gain the necessary working space, we carefully removed a section of 1.5” piping, allowing us to properly access and repair the damaged mainline. Once the repair was completed, we reinstalled the 1.5” piping and restored everything to its original configuration.

While the mainline was drained, we also took the opportunity to replace a faulty 2” control valve that had become stuck open.

With both repairs completed, we brought the 5 HP well system back up to operating pressure, tested the irrigation system, and thoroughly inspected our work for leaks.

Everything checked out, and the system is back in operation!

Lightning damage can be some of the most extensive and challenging damage an irrigation system can experience, and this property in Daphne is a perfect example.

Several weeks ago, we began the process of diagnosing and restoring an irrigation system that sustained significant damage from a lightning strike in the front yard. The electrical current traveled through the underground control wiring, causing extensive electrical damage and rupturing irrigation pipes at multiple locations throughout the property.

Restoring a system with this level of damage requires thorough troubleshooting, careful diagnostics, and a systematic approach to identifying and repairing each affected component.

Today’s progress included six underground leak repairs, a complete valve manifold replacement, extensive electrical repairs, and the installation of a new irrigation controller.

After completing these repairs, we successfully restored controller operation to the majority of the irrigation zones. While additional electrical troubleshooting and repairs are still needed, we’re making excellent progress toward getting the entire system back to normal.

We’ll be returning next week to continue the restoration, but things are certainly looking up for our customer here in Daphne!

Decent sized irrigation repair project in Fairhope today.

Our customer called us to inspect her system because she felt several things were not working properly. During the inspection, we found five broken rotors, multiple broken spray heads, and several areas experiencing overwatering and underwatering.

One of the main issues was spray heads installed on the same zones as rotors. Since sprays and rotors apply water at very different rates, this can lead to uneven coverage and excessive watering. We replaced the sprays with MP Rotators to better match the precipitation rate of the existing rotors.

After completing the repairs and adjustments, we got the entire system back up and running properly. We also installed a rain sensor to help prevent unnecessary watering during and after rainfall.

Service call in Daphne today for two irrigation zones that had stopped working.

After troubleshooting the system, we found the issue near a pest control bait station. The irrigation pipe had previously been hit during installation of the bait station and repaired, but the irrigation wire had also been damaged and went unnoticed.

We located the damaged wire, made the repair, and restored power to both zones.

Sometimes an irrigation problem that looks like a valve or controller issue comes down to hidden wire damage underground. Proper troubleshooting helps find the actual cause and get the system back up and running without unnecessary repairs.

Small project in Fairhope this morning for a customer who recently purchased their home. One of the first things they did was have a dedicated buddy meter installed so they wouldn’t have to pay sewage charges on the water used for irrigation.

They called South Coast Irrigation to disconnect the irrigation system from the original meter and reconnect it to the new buddy meter. While we were there, they also wanted to get a little more use out of that dedicated water supply, so we installed two spigots in convenient locations around the property.

Now they can use those spigots for washing vehicles and other outdoor tasks without paying sewage charges on that water either.

Two of our three service calls today involved connecting irrigation systems to newly installed buddy meters.

It may not be the most glamorous irrigation work, but a buddy meter can be a great investment for homeowners with irrigation systems or pools. A buddy meter is a dedicated water meter used for things like irrigation and pool filling. Because that water does not enter the sewer system, the city does not charge sewage fees on the water used through the buddy meter.

The return on investment will always depend on how much water you use, but for properties with higher outdoor water usage, the savings can add up over time.

If you are interested in having one installed, reach out to your local utility company to see if buddy meters are available in your area. Once the city installs the new meter, South Coast Irrigation can disconnect your irrigation system from the existing water supply and connect it to the new buddy meter.
