Custom Pest Control is a family owned business started by Douglas J. Baker who each had a father that served their community in the field of pest control. Custom Pest Control was created to continue in this tradition and to provide folks with personal and affordable Pest Management. What Pests Are You Seeing Right Now? 🔎

Late August in the Finger Lakes means more than the last days of summer. It also means pest season is in full swing. 👀

Around your home, you might be noticing:

🐝 Wasps & yellowjackets — Nests are active, and you may notice more of them around decks, patios, eaves and outdoor gatherings.

🐞 Ladybugs — Especially Asian lady beetles, which can become a bigger indoor nuisance when they start looking for places to shelter.

🪲 Japanese beetles — Still making themselves very comfortable in gardens, landscaping and on plants.

🪳 Box elder bugs — You may start noticing these more as summer winds down and they begin preparing for cooler weather.

🪲 Stink bugs — Another Finger Lakes favorite. They can start congregating around sunny sides of buildings before eventually finding their way inside.

🕷️ Spiders — More webs around the house? That can be a sign that there are plenty of insects around for them to eat.

🐜 Ants — If you're still seeing them inside, there may be more going on than just a few crumbs on the counter.

• Keep porch lights off when possible
• Remove webs regularly
• Trim bushes away from the house
• Seal gaps around windows and doors

🐜 Pest Myth

MYTH: If you only see one ant, you don't have a problem.

FACT: Ants rarely travel alone. The one you see is usually part of a much larger colony.

If you're seeing ants regularly inside your home, it's worth finding out where they're coming from before the colony grows.

🐝 Ever wonder what happens when bees move into your walls?

This photo shows one of our technicians carefully treating a bee colony that's built a nest inside the wall of a home.

First, we locate where the bees are entering from outside and determine where the colony is likely hiding. In this case, the bees had built their hive inside the wall cavity, where they're protected from the weather.

Using specialized equipment, our technician makes a small, targeted access point and applies treatment directly into the wall where the colony is located. This allows us to reach the bees without opening up large sections of drywall or causing unnecessary damage.

Once the colony has been eliminated, we recommend removing the honeycomb whenever possible and sealing the entry point. If the comb is left behind, it can attract other insects - or even a new swarm of bees looking for a ready-made home.

🐝 The goal isn't just to get rid of the bees you see - it's to solve the problem at its source so they don't come back.

If you've noticed bees consistently entering the same spot on your home, don't ignore it. It could be a sign there's a colony hidden inside the wall.

🧺 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: Dryer sheets keep mice away.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆:
Dryer sheets might smell fresh to us, but there's no strong scientific evidence that they repel mice. At best, they may temporarily discourage a curious mouse, but once rodents find food, water, or shelter, they're unlikely to be deterred by a scented sheet.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Seal entry points, eliminate food sources, and remove any existing rodent activity.
