While I typically refrain from discussing competitors or the products used by other flooring companies, I would like to address the misinformation often shared during estimates by explaining why we believe our system is generally superior, particularly in Florida.
This is not merely our perspective, as many professional installers consider a 100% solids epoxy moisture v***r barrier to be the gold standard for a base coat. While polyurea is often marketed as the latest technology, epoxy offers distinct chemical advantages when applied directly to raw concrete.
Why Epoxy Outperforms Polyurea as a Base Coat
• Deep Concrete Pe*******on: Because epoxy has a slower cure time than polyurea, it can deeply pe*****te and mechanically lock into the pores of the concrete slab before hardening.
• Superior Moisture V***r Management: Concrete slabs naturally transmit moisture, and polyurea is highly sensitive to dampness, which can lead to foaming or delamination. Conversely, specialized epoxy primers can withstand significant moisture pressure to prevent blistering.
• Thicker Build Layer: Epoxy is applied more thickly than polyurea, which helps to mask floor imperfections and provides a smoother base for decorative flakes.
The Hybrid Gold Standard System
The most effective flooring systems combine both materials to leverage their unique strengths.
Base Coat: 100% Solids Epoxy / MVB is used for maximum adhesion, thickness, and moisture control.
Media Broadcast: Vinyl Flakes or Quartz are embedded into the wet epoxy base.
Top Coat: Polyaspartic is applied for its scratch resistance, durability against hot-tire pickup, and UV stability.
Why do many franchise companies prioritize a full polyurea system?
Because polyurea cures in under an hour, it allows crews to complete a job in a single day. An epoxy base coat requires the installer to return the following day once it has cured. Therefore, a polyurea base coat often prioritizes the installer's schedule, whereas an epoxy base coat is frequently more beneficial for the long-term moisture resilience of the homeowner's slab.
