💧 Do you know where your main water shutoff is?

A leaking pipe, overflowing fixture, or broken water line can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Knowing how to quickly shut off the water is helpful for homeowners, renters, and business owners.

🔎 Common places to look:

🏠 Near the water meter
🔧 In the basement or utility room
🚪 Near the wall where the main water line enters the building
🏢 In a mechanical room or designated maintenance area
🏘️ Renters may have a shutoff inside the unit or may need to contact the landlord or property manager

Most shutoffs have either a round wheel or a lever handle. A lever is usually off when it is turned perpendicular to the pipe.

Take a few minutes to locate your shutoff before an emergency happens. Make sure everyone who lives or works in the building knows where it is too.

Never force a valve that is stuck, damaged, or heavily corroded.

A little preparation can make a big difference! 💦

🔧 DIY vs. Call the Pros

Before calling in your expert, there are a few simple things you can safely check first:

🔥 No heat or AC?
• Check the thermostat settings
• Make sure the batteries are good
• Check the breaker
• Make sure your fuel supply is not empty

🚿 Plumbing issue?
• Check whether the problem is isolated to one fixture or happening throughout the house
• Make sure any nearby shutoff valves are open
• Check for an obvious clog you can safely clear

💧 No hot water?
• Check the breaker
• Make sure the water heater has power
• Look for any obvious leaks around the unit

Sometimes the fix really is something simple!

But if you have already checked the basics and something still is not right, that is usually a good sign it is time to bring in someone who knows what they are looking at. 😅

A little DIY troubleshooting is great.

Taking apart your heating system after watching three YouTube videos? Maybe leave that one to the pros. 😂

Our list:

💧A map of every water shutoff
🔧Labels on every mystery valve
💡Instructions for every random basement switch
🗺The location of every cleanout
👂A section called “What is that noise?”
🔊A section called “Is that supposed to be doing that?” 😂

Homeownership is basically just slowly learning what everything in your house does... usually right after something stops working.

A dirty air filter restricts airflow and can make your system work harder than necessary. That may lead to:

🔥 Reduced efficiency
🔥 Uneven heating
🔥 More dust in your home
🔥 Added strain on the system

Check your filter regularly and replace it when it looks dirty. Your furnace and your utility bill may thank you!
