Those tiny granules covering your shingles serve an important purpose. They help protect the asphalt beneath from UV rays, weather, and the elements. As a roof ages, some granular loss is expected. The question is how much is too much?
Here’s what the different stages can look like:
🟢 STAGE 1: MINIMAL GRANULAR LOSS
A newer roof may lose a small amount of granules, especially after installation or during normal weather exposure. A few granules in your gutters alone do not necessarily mean your roof needs to be replaced.
🟡 STAGE 2: NOTICEABLE GRANULAR LOSS
As shingles age, you may begin seeing more exposed asphalt or areas where the shingle surface looks thinner. This is a good time to have your roof inspected, especially if you live in an area exposed to high winds, hail, and severe weather.
🟠 STAGE 3: SIGNIFICANT GRANULAR LOSS
When large areas of the shingle have lost their protective granules, the asphalt becomes increasingly exposed to UV damage and weather. At this stage, your roof may be approaching the end of its service life.
🔴 STAGE 4: ADVANCED GRANULAR LOSS
Extensive bare spots, cracking, curling, brittle shingles, exposed fiberglass mat, or widespread deterioration are signs that replacement may be necessary. Storm damage can accelerate this process considerably.
⚠️ ONE IMPORTANT NOTE:
Granular loss isn’t always caused by age. Hail and other storm damage can remove granules from shingles even when a roof is relatively young. That’s why a professional inspection is important before assuming your roof simply needs to be replaced because of age.
