These homeowners reached out to us after their paver patio started failing just 2 years after it was installed. Once we removed the old patio, we found the previous contractor had built it on roughly 6” of sand with only about 1” of rock underneath.

After excavating the area, we discovered a large amount of groundwater beneath the patio. To properly handle the drainage issues, we installed a chimney drain to pull water from beneath the patio and a French drain alongside the patio where excess water from the neighboring property was running directly onto the patio area. We excavated 12” below the patio and nearly 2’ deeper around the chimney drain installation to ensure a solid, long-lasting foundation.

After the 5” of rain we received over the weekend, we got to watch the chimney drain working exactly as designed — pulling water out from beneath the patio.

A proper foundation and drainage system is what makes the difference between a patio that lasts 2 years and one that lasts decades.
