Constructors Founded in 1908, Constructors is Nebraska’s oldest asphalt and concrete paving company. In 1945, 8 years after the passing of George P. Abel, Jr.

Constructors, Inc. – Nebraska’s oldest paving contracting company – is the lineal descendant of a firm originally founded in 1908 by George P. Abel, Sr., and Charles Roberts under the name Abel & Roberts Construction. Both Abel and Roberts had graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1906 with degrees in engineering. With an initial investment of $100.00, George purchased six heavy shovels, tw

o steel wheelbarrows, and one hand concrete mixer. In 1910, Abel & Roberts Construction started its first city paving job – six blocks along “O” Street from 33rd Street to Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, NE. In 1911, shortly after completing its second city street paving project on South Street from 11th to 27th, the company purchased its first asphalt plant. Due to an increase in business, the company split in 1915 into Abel Construction Company and Roberts Construction Company. From 1920 to 1928, Abel Construction continued city paving and had large contracts with Alliance, Ashland, Beatrice, Lincoln, Nebraska City, Norfolk, North Platte, Wayne and many other Nebraska towns. From 1931 until the start of World War II, Abel Construction completed about 25% of the highway work in the state of Nebraska. Abel, Sr., the company was incorporated by George P. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Abel Construction acquired many companies including Kerford Limestone Company, and continued developing Nebraska’s highways and city streets. In 1974, Abel Construction changed its corporate name to Constructors. Today, Constructors continues working in the southeastern region of Nebraska, with emphasis on heavy highway concrete and asphalt paving. To date, Constructors owns Trafcon, which handles traffic control and highway striping, Kerford Limestone Company in Weeping Water, Nebraska, a primary source for many aggregates, as well as Nebraska Ash Company and Plains Pozzolanic which supply Constructors with coal ash for concrete and soil stabilization. The managers, superintendents, foreman, and crew members of Constructors, Inc. and its predecessors have always had a reputation for quality performance and timely completion in a wide variety of projects.

Join the project team at 9 a.m. Wednesdays at the Music Box, 1330 N St. (main entrance is on 14th St.), to ask questions, hear about construction progress, provide feedback, and learn what’s ahead as we improve our iconic main street to make downtown better for everyone – residents, businesses, students, and visitors alike.

From smoother streets and upgraded sidewalks to enhanced lighting, new landscaping, and safer pedestrian crossings, the improvements we’re making reflect the ideas and priorities Lincolnites have shared with us from day one, and good communication with our community continues to be important to us.

A little asphalt action on Project O Street! While much of the project involves concrete, the existing asphalt around 14th and P is getting a fresh asphalt update. Why not concrete? Replacing asphalt with asphalt minimizes impact to the surrounding businesses, walkways, and infrastructures creating a smoother transition from old to new.

Despite some rain, Russell’s crew got the job done smoothly (literally and metaphorically).

Progress Update: Lincoln Airport Runway 18/36

We’re about one-third of the way through the 650-day Lincoln Airport Runway 18/36 Replacement Project. Across 11 crews, there’s a lot taking shape, often while most of Lincoln is sleeping.

So far, approximately 54,625 square yards of the project’s 17-inch concrete runway has been paved. These 17 inches make up the top layer of the "runway sandwich" totaling 48 inches of structural section beneath the aircraft.

An exciting piece of this project is that the old runway will have a new life! Crushing crews are processing the demolished concrete for reuse within the new runway footprint and shoulders.

We’re proud of the progress our teams are making and especially grateful to the crews working hard to keep the project moving. Their coordination and commitment are helping build the next generation of Lincoln Airport’s Runway 18/36.

Daily pours continue in downtown Lincoln as Project O Street progresses.

This morning, crews teamed up with Ready Mixed Concrete to pave the 16th & O Street intersection as phase 1 of the project continues. Along with new pavement, the updated intersection will improve traffic flow while creating a more cohesive streetscape that enhances the experience for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
