MB architecture + design

MB architecture + design believes that good design is sustainable. You choose what services are right for your project.

Located in the heart of the Green Mountains of Vermont, MB architecture + design specializes in renovation and redesign, as well as, the incorporation of recycled and salvaged materials in new spaces. Before "green architecture" became a catch phase, the fundamental practices behind "green" design were an integral part in our design intentions. Because the most sustainable design is the reuse of existing space, we specialize in renovation and redesign, as well as, the incorporation of recycled and salvaged materials in new spaces. MB architecture + design offers a full range of design services which can be customized for each client-- from site selection & initial design ideas to construction documents & administration; from initial schematic sketches to helping you choose your local materials & your energy efficient appliances.

Black houses! . .
The spotlight is new but the Halloween magic is timeless. . .

Coming out of a Vermont winter has a way of making you appreciate beauty all over again.

The light changes. The days get longer. And as the season shifts, we find ourselves looking back at past builds — projects that remind us why we do this work and what it looks like when everything comes together the way it should.
There’s something about quality craftsmanship in wood that holds up over time. Not just structurally — but visually. The grain. The warmth. The way a well-built timber frame or a carefully finished interior catches light differently depending on the season. It doesn’t age. It deepens.

That’s what we keep coming back to. No matter how much evolves in how we build — the materials, the technology, the methods — the simplicity of wood and honest craftsmanship stays at the front of our minds.

Because some things don’t need to be reinvented. They just need to be done right.

🪵 Built with intention. Rooted in Vermont.

One of the first residences built on the south peak of Sugarbush in the late 1960s, these row houses were designed + built by students in the architecture department .
Since it hadn’t been touched since, this row house required a full gut and redesign. . .

Christie Sumner’s garage, connected to her newly built home, is painted a rich red to echo the attached barns of classic New England farmhouses.

On the front porch, a grove of cut evergreen trees sits in tubs and glows with strands of white lights, offering a warm and inviting welcome. ❤️

For a close-knit family, transforming this guest house into a full-time residence offered a creative way for two brothers’ families to live close but in separate dwellings. Reimagined as a stylish single-family home, the dwelling blends modern design with cozy charm.

Now clad in shou sugi ban siding, the house retains its original roof and classic 2-over-2 windows. Inside, the open-concept kitchen/living area provides an inviting space that’s ideal for everyday life.
