Help Baby Christopher and the Krivda Family Through an Unimaginable Journey
If you've had the privilege of knowing Ben and Sabrina, you know the incredible love they have for their family and the strength they show every day. Today, they need their village more than ever.
Their precious son, Christopher, made an unexpected entrance into the world at just 32½ weeks gestation. Instead of bringing their newborn home, Ben and Sabrina spent the next 35 days by his side in the NICU at Bryan East Hospital. Those first weeks were filled with uncertainty as Christopher relied on CPAP to help him breathe, tube feedings for nourishment, respiratory treatments, antibiotics, and around-the-clock monitoring.
After weeks of prayers, tears, and hope, they finally received the news they had been waiting for. On July 9, Christopher came home. It felt like this stressful start was behind them.
Sadly, just one week later, their world was turned upside down again.
On July 16, while enjoying a family dinner together, Christopher became unresponsive and stopped breathing. Every parent's worst nightmare had become reality.
Without hesitation, Ben immediately began CPR, and by the grace of God, he was able to get Christopher breathing again before emergency responders arrived. Christopher was rushed by ambulance to Bryan East Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, doctors determined he needed a higher level of care and he was transported by Life Flight (as a precaution due to his respiratory issues) to the NICU at Children's Hospital in Omaha.
There, Christopher endured countless tests, including a spinal tap, while doctors searched for answers. The diagnosis was Enterovirus causing Viral Meningitis. While hearing the word "meningitis" was terrifying, the family was grateful to finally have an answer and a condition that doctors expect will improve with treatment rather than become a lifelong issue.
Christopher is once again fought with incredible strength. On Thursday, he returned to CPAP, tube feedings, IV antibiotics, and continuous monitoring, but each day he has made huge strides! On Sunday he was off of CPAP, and began to eat by bottle again. If all continues in this positive direction he will be home by early this week!
As you can imagine, this has created an overwhelming situation for Ben and Sabrina, as it would anyone in their shoes. They are navigating mounting medical expenses while also maintaining everyday life of a young family:
Hospital and medical bills
Travel expenses incurred between home and Omaha
Gas, meals, and lodging during Christopher's hospitalization in Omaha
Mortgage and household bills
Groceries and daily living expenses
Lost income as Sabrina's unpaid maternity leave continues beyond what anyone anticipated
