PROTECT YOUR HOME AND BUSINESS
With our deep snow and frozen ground, this rainy weather has the potential to cause flooding of streets, yards, and basements. The following suggestions are offered to reduce the risk of water damage to your home or business.

1. Shovel a channel through the snow from downspouts towards a low point in the yard. The less slope you have in your yard the longer the channels need to be.

2. If downspouts empty into an underground conduit that conduit is likely clogged with ice. You should disconnect it and attach an above ground downspout extender aiming towards the low point in the yard. Dig a channel through the snow if necessary.

3. If you have a basement window near the soil line clear as much snow as possible away from them and extend a channel from the windows toward a low point in the yard. As with downspouts the less slope you have in your yard the longer channels need to be.

4. Check your sump pump drain line. Inspect the area where the drain line empties outside your house. Look for ice or snow blocking the end of the line. Remove any visible obstructions. Attach an extender line aiming towards lowest point in yard or storm drain.

5. If you live near a storm drain consider carefully chopping some ice and snow away from the drain. Even a small opening will allow water to flow in which will eventually erode away a larger opening into the drain.
