This past weekend, the SkillsUSA Nebraska State Leadership and Skills Championships took place in Grand Island, bringing together more than 3,000 students and educators from across the state.

A special thank you goes to the Central Nebraska Home Builders Association and its members for their outstanding support of one of the nation’s leading workforce development organizations. CNHBA members played a vital role in the event—donating materials, organizing competitions, guiding students through rules and procedures, and serving as judges for contests including TeamWorks, Carpentry, Cabinetry, Masonry, HVAC, and Sheet Metal.

CNHBA also welcomed Bob Peterson, First Vice Chairman of the National Association of Home Builders, who attended and spoke during the Opening Ceremonies and participated in the VIP Tour. Bob noted the incredible energy from the students and the excitement surrounding the competitions.

In his honor, CNHBA hosted a dinner Thursday evening for board members and their spouses, followed by a statewide HBA luncheon on Friday.

Events like this highlight the strength of partnerships between education and industry—and the bright future of the skilled trades.

The Nebraska State Home Builders Association (NSHBA) is now accepting applications for up to three community construction or remodel projects in 2026. The Community Build program connects professional builders with Nebraska nonprofits and government agencies to help construct or renovate small facilities that support their missions and public service work.

Priority consideration will be given to projects proposed by:

Historical societies
Homeless shelters
Educational and training programs
Applicants must be located near one of NSHBA’s four local chapters and have project funding already secured. Builders will provide firm bids for labor, while applicants are responsible for design and materials.

Ideal projects can be completed in one or two weekends by a teams sized up to 10 skilled workers. Licensed trades must perform any plumbing or electrical work, but all other labor, tools, and equipment will be provided at cost by homebuilder volunteers. Project funding remains the responsibility of the nonprofit applicant.
