Just kidding. 😂

That’s just what I tell myself when I find myself in these sorts of situations.

Today’s adventure: a leaking pressurized sewer force main along with a vacuum/pressure relief valve replacement, now underway in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Not exactly oil, but definitely the kind of underground surprise you want the right crew handling. 💩🔧

🛸 UFO SIGHTING IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY?! 🛸

We can neither confirm nor deny that extraterrestrials have landed at a local park.

What we CAN confirm is that whatever this thing is, Freedom Plumbers & Pumpers installed it.

And despite appearances, this shiny stainless-steel contraption isn’t communicating with the mothership.

It’s a pressure/vacuum air relief valve assembly installed at a high point on a pressurized sewer force main.

So… what does it actually do?

As wastewater is pumped through a pressurized sewer system, air can collect at high points in the piping. If that trapped air isn’t properly released, it can interfere with flow, reduce pumping efficiency, create pressure problems, and contribute to damaging hydraulic conditions within the system.

This valve gives that trapped air somewhere to go.

Depending on the valve and operating condition, the assembly can also help manage vacuum conditions when the pipeline drains or experiences changing pressures.

In simple terms:

Air gets trapped → the valve releases it.

Pressure drops and vacuum develops → the system can admit air as designed

Wastewater keeps moving → pumps and force mains operate more efficiently.

It may look like something from Area 51, but it’s actually an important piece of wastewater infrastructure. And installing, repairing, and maintaining systems like these is exactly the kind of work our wastewater team specializes in.

This popular pizza restaurant in Wi******er, Virginia called Freedom Plumbers & Pumpers, Septic & Drain for a second opinion after dealing with the same sewer backup over and over again.

Once we cleared the line and performed an in-depth camera inspection, the real problem became obvious.
