As the growing season comes to an end, here’s a look back on some beautiful blooms from the late-summer garden.

10/21/2026

Late season blooms of aster, agastache, and solidago provide pollinators with a final feeding before winter sets in. Have you noticed how plants seem to flutter this time of year, alive with the movement of animals gathering food?

We can’t help loving grasses that impede paths. Having to walk through their soft seed heads is a sensory delight. And they soften hard edges and create mystery in a small garden space. Muhly forever.

This garden takes on a completely new feeling as autumn arrives. The seed heads of grasses, asters, spent flower heads, and the long light of fall come together to reveal a luminous and radiant garden space.

Muhlenbergia reverchonii is the highlight of our fall. Its diaphanous seed heads are almost impossible to capture in a photo (Brooke Forwood Photo did an amazing job!). But they transform even an ugly exterior into a place of wonder. Picture 3 shows their presence among fall perennials.

The mystery that plants create is an ever-changing, ethereal experience. The haze of Sporobolus airoides slowly reveals a hidden fire pit as Epilobium and Agastache add bits of fireworks along the way. Working with plants to create mystery and the slow reveal is rewarding. Hardscapes are nothing without the hiddenness plants bring.

Seeded meadows are always new and exciting. This year, penstemon has taken center stage with beautiful hues of pink and violet. Years after the initial seeding, these plants continue to self-seed and create a beautifully wild landscape.

One of the misconceptions about creating a garden is that a garden needs a great expanse of space. This pocket garden at a church in Loveland creates an immersive vignette in a very small footprint.

Gardens are dynamic, not only in the seasonal displays of color, but also in the growth strategy of each plant. Our job as gardeners is not to dominate the landscape but to understand each plant and know the conditions to help them thrive.

The farmhouse planting continues to develop and deepen even in the midst of a severe drought. After four years the seeding continues to flourish and new species (like Erigeron) finally show up in the display. Working with time and creating a planting that develops has been so rewarding. The continued stewardship and selective weeding has made this property better and better as each year passes.
