Once the eat-in breakfast room off the terrace, this corner of this Mill Valley house now serves as a mudroom, laundry room, and casual office. A small built-in desk tucks beneath the window. The change was part of a first-floor renovation that reorganized the kitchen and service spaces to better accommodate how our client entertains.

At the front door of this Mill Valley home, small doorways once led to the library and living room. "The scheme was a bit ad hoc," says principal Heidi Richardson. A house of this era would typically have had a large foyer with wide openings on both sides. We enlarged the openings, and a library now opens directly off the entry.

RPA reworked the first floor of this historic home with entertaining in mind. We repurposed the stained-glass pocket doors from the home's dining room for the new pantry. The pantry sits off the original kitchen, which our client chose to keep and refresh rather than replace.

"I really wanted to change the gravity of the house," says Lily Kanter. In her 1907 Mill Valley remodel, that meant removing the sliding doors between the dining and living rooms to create one great room, then adding a new kitchen, since guests always end up in the kitchen anyway! Relocating a door to the porch made room for a large window facing old-growth redwoods. Just off the great room, a failing roof deck is now a sunroom clad in European white oak, with windows on three sides.

This jewel box of a space sits in what used to be a storage area in this remodeled Mill Valley home. Now a walk-through bar, the room connects the two sides of the house and features walnut cabinetry with brass mesh inserts, brass fixtures, a copper sink, and a backlit wall of Patagonia quartzite.

At the Residence, a smaller entertaining room off the main living space doubles as a spot to gather with a drink in hand. A vaulted gable ceiling expands the compact footprint, and a wall of sliding glass doors opens onto a deck framed by the redwoods.

Like many older homes, Lily Kanter's 1907 Mill Valley house was broken up into isolated rooms that didn't suit contemporary gatherings. For two decades, she made only cosmetic updates while raising her sons and building her companies. As she moved into a new phase centered on fundraising, making connections, and entertaining, she asked RPA to rethink how the home functions, not just how it looks.

We started at the entry, where an L-shaped stair and small doorways made the space feel cramped. "The scheme was a bit ad hoc," says principal Heidi Richardson. We enlarged the openings to the library and living room and reconfigured the stair into one long run. A failing roof deck became a sunroom clad in European white oak, and the sliding doors between the dining and living rooms came out to form a great room. The new kitchen now sits in that great room, since, as Kanter puts it, guests always end up in the kitchen.

The ADU at the New Redwood Canopy is a small, contemporary cabin rooted in the Mill Valley vernacular, set into the hillside beneath the redwood canopy. Inside, the gabled ceiling and walls of glazing keep the trees visible from every room. Outside, board-and-batten siding and dark bronze window frames fade quietly into the landscape.

Casement windows and strategically placed skylights keep the bath bright and cheerful throughout the day. In the primary bath of this Mill Valley Residence, the material palette is tight and deliberate, featuring matte black fixtures, warm walnut, and white Corian.
