A traditional lodge perched atop a hill in Mill Valley, reimagined for modern living. The bones were always there: the scale, the volume, the oak-woodland setting, but layers from previous renovations needed editing. New oversized openings, restored structural columns, and reconfigured interiors brought the building back to itself: understated, warm, and connected to the landscape outside. The interiors do the rest, balancing old-world craft with modern restraint.

The dining room at Views Across the Valley opens on two sides, sliding glass doors to a terrace on the right, and a wall of glazing facing a board-formed concrete planter and the terraced hillside beyond. On a sloped Mill Valley lot, that layering of interior, hardscape, and landscape is what makes the indoor-outdoor connection work; there's always something to look at at every depth.

One of the primary goals for the was to strengthen the connection between the interiors and the surrounding landscape and improve the home’s functionality for frequent family gatherings.

A multi-slide door opens the living room directly onto a deck with a fire pit and views of the Mt. Tamalpais watershed beyond. On the pool side, a covered outdoor room sits just off the water, shaded by mature oaks. The result is a relaxed, welcoming residence that lives larger than its footprint. With its thoughtful mix of updates and additions, the home now accommodates large family gatherings with ease, offering spaces that transition seamlessly between indoor comfort and outdoor enjoyment.

A freestanding soaking tub positioned directly under a black-framed window, with redwoods beyond, on the other. A Capiz-shell pendant overhead that feels exactly right for a house with this much natural light.
